    Hi there,
I have recently bought a Sony CR 42 notebook. It is a good machine, but there is a problem I have with the keyboard. It keeps missing strokes.

Sometimes it is quite bad, and given that I tested a similar model in the shop, I am very disappointed to be experiencing this problem.

Does anyone know of any solutions? I would be most grateful for any input as this is a really upsetting problem. I keep having to go back and edit text, and this is obviously a completely unacceptable situation as I am trying to write a novel.

For everyone's information, I am not running any major applications in the background, just Word 2007 for the text editing.

Secondly, if anyone could suggest to me a notebook computer with a better keyboard, I would be indebted to them. It doesn't have to be particularly fancy.

Finally, if anyone has any information on whether Sony are intending to replace the CR anytime soon, that too would be much appreciated.

In fact, Sony just recently released the CS notebook, meant to replace the CR series. If you're still within the return window, I'd honestly just recommend skipping the hassles of repairs and getting a refund for your laptop and maybe checking out the new series or some other type of laptop instead.

Thank you very much indeed for that information, Lattice.

Alas, I am just outside the window and cannot return this machine, but I'm willing to take a financial hit because the deadline for my novel is really quite close. I mean, it is nine months away, but that's absolutely nothing considering that I have to type many tens of thousands of words in that time.

If anyone happens to know of a notebook with a really good keyboard that can be typed at all day, then I would sincerely appreciate any suggestions.

I think which keyboard is good generally depends on the user, but Lenovo has very good reputations for keyboards and you'll eventually get used to the trackpoint, so you might check out some of their laptops.

That said, this sounds like a malfunctioning keyboard, though. If you're still under warranty, just call Sony and ask them if it's something they'd repair under warranty. I recently sent my SR in for repair, and the day after I called, I received a FedEx overnight box. I shipped it out on a Saturday, Sony received it on Monday, and I got the laptop back the Monday after that. So you won't lose too much time, but if you have no other machine, I can see how this might be an inconvenience.

That turnaround time you mentioned is not too bad, but this is the only machine I have. Not wishing to be too melodramatic, but my entire life is on it.

That said, I will definitely consider what you have said, and I really appreciate your response.
