    Hello all,

I purchased the black Sony CW i5 from Best Buy about six weeks ago and have been quite pleased with it. However, lately I have noticed a high pitched sound eminating from the computer. It's not terribly loud but if I am web browsing in a quiet room it is noticeable. I would like to find a solution and was wondering if anyone else had come across this problem, and/or had some ideas on how to fix it. Thanks for your help.

I noticed this too. It is similar to CPU whine of some Santa Rosa platform CPUs. So if this helps any one help him... idk :D

You sure it isnt ur hard drive? My gf has the one bought from bestbuy. The whine noise came from the right side of the palm rest; where the HDD is located. Switched out the seagate w/ a WD5000BEVT; no whine. =D

It could be the hard drive. I'm not sure. I'll try to pay closer attention the next couple days. I'd rather not spring for a new hard drive of course.

Glad I'm not the only person who's noticed this.

Yea, actually I've had a few Seagate and Fujitsu drives whine (especially the 5400rpm models, the 7200's just vibrate a bit). But the tosh that came in mine was virtually silent.

Ok, I have noticed that this is much more of an issue when running on battery. How would that relate to a possible hard drive issue? Also, if I sent it to Sony would they switch out the drives under the warranty?

Fortunately, it's really only a minor annoyance at this point.

Mine did that too....on battery only. Probably just a benign power supply / regulator "characteristic."

This sounds like you have a drive with AAM numbers set between A/C and battery. AAM stands for Automatic Acoustic Management, and it sounds like your settings are backwards.

    Boo Boo (great name),

Stupid question: which one of those (on the link) do I download? High definition audio codecs?

    XGX,

Anyway I could verify/change those settings?

    High Definition Audio Codecs (Software)

for some reason the links are not working for all 3 DL sites. i used the 3rd and had it zipped. but they don't seem to work now.

you can try the VPCZ series which is 6015 i think

to check current version of drivers

go to device manager - audio select the realtek and click on driver tab.

current s series was 6.0.1.5099 i think or something like that

Download and run quietHDD. It will let you change or view any acoustic mgmt settings.

It's not likely a driver issue. My Sony F has a similar sound and it seems related to the 7200 hard drive or some high frequency vibration as the laptop gets hotter. Sony tech support said that they were aware of this issue, but did not have a clear understanding on how to repair it.
Geezzzz Why sell a laptop that clearly is broken

I noticed after doing a clean install the hdd noise went away. I'm sure it's caused from all the BS services running in the background from the bloatware.

I don't know if the following is related (since I've got a Z), but it's some sort of high-pitched sound so here goes.
I've got a high-pitched whine coming from the the CPU / exhaust fan area. Own a old gen Z, running the Centrino 2 Duo P8600.

The 'sound' only occurs right before the fan turns up the speed. The duration of the 'sound' can range from between 1 to 5 seconds. The fan only makes the whine sounds before speeding UP. Not before it decides to speed DOWN.

The curious thing is, I have set a shortcut button (S2) so that I can manually toggle between the SILENT, BALANCED, and HIGH PERFORMANCE fan modes. If I change the fan speed that way, no whine at all. This whine only occurs when the fan is trying to change speeds automatically.
