How much memory could I gain by doing a clean install of XP Pro and necessary drivers, instead of running the system like it came preloaded from Sony?

I have 2Gigs of memory installed now but the system is taking 500MB to run it.

it depends on numerous factors; but i'd say a fresh install of xp with nothing else on top of it should probably run about 250 to 350 megs of memory just sitting there.

So I guess I'm better off leaving the factory install.

    Hello again,

It seems like the system ran smoother with 60GB7200 HDD #1 with the Sony factory install. 60GB 7200 HDD #2 was a clean XP Pro install and memory increased from 1.57GHZ-to-1.62GHz. But what was strange is that the processor ran hotter up to 57C.

Here's the order of drivers installed:

BIOS update (if available) No update available
    Intel Chipset (if applicable)
    Sony Notebook Control (if applicable)
Sony Programmable I/O (if applicable) Sony didn't have this
    Sony Shared Library
    Video
    Audio
    Modem
    Network
    Wireless
    MPEG
    Memory Stick
    Wireless Keyboard and Mouse utility
    Any Other Sony Utilities

I forgot to mention that the computer start-up time with a clean XP install was cut
in half to 28 seconds. But after it started running it seemed just as fast as the Sony install.

    Has anyone had the experience?

start up time as in turning the power or from the login to ready to use?
Mine takes about 30 seconds from login until windows finish loading whatever in the taskbar. Sometime it's only 15 seconds. The extra time to 30 seconds is usually caused by waiting for the network icons to show up
