It appears to be common conception that Sony has a really poor customer service but after a recent investigation by Laptop Mag it seems Sony have listened to consumers and improved their Tech Support.

Has anyone else experienced an improvement or is it still the same old story?

I read this too, I was surprised actually. I was expecting Sony to get slammed with a bad grade, and instead Toshiba seemed to be the one that got the awful marks. Hopefully it's true that Sony is listening. I do think that some of it depends on your luck with which rep you get though. I dealt with Sony's tech support recently and actually had a decent experience as well. By contrast, a few years ago I contacted them in regard to a TV and the impression was very different (not good).

I have experienced very good customer service from sony recently. When I called up to order my SZ, the rep i spoke to was really helpful, she gave me her name and direct number and told me to call her if i had any problems. And two days later after I had recieved my laptop, I received a courtesy call from her, just to check that i was happy and everything was ok :)

Well its pretty good when you're lucky to have a Sony flagship store ion town. When you buy your business notebook there (like the S or SZ line) you'll get 48h service. Bring it monday with a defect and get it wednesday. I never had to use that personally but a fried of mine had a problem with his S5 and they really worked it out in two days.

I'm guessing that's in the USA. Is there any such service available on UK Vaio SZs purchased online?

Ahh Germany, a country renowned for its efficiency, why can't they get some germans working the customer service over here in the UK eh?

Well I'd rather like to have more value for money. Here they rip you of with the laptops no matter what brand. The SZ2VP, thats the best premium model of the SZ2, is sold for 2600EUR. Thats more than $3300 and way more expensive than the same model in the US. Better service makes up for that a little but I that sucks anyway seeing that I could get better hardware for my money overseas.

why didn't you order from overseas, surely after P&P there would still be a substantial discount.

Well I buy overseas whenever I can and I'm over in the US or in Asia (mainly Singapore) myself. I then bring it over myself. I'd like to test things before buying them (pixel defect etc) so mail order is not an option. Besides hefty import fees (customs etc) would eat up the savings. Buy it yourself in the US or Asia when on vacation or business trip is the best. It's slightly illegal if you're not declaring the stuff to the custom folks but who cares.

I'm happy to hear the customer service has improved. I had a Sony laptop 5 years ago, that I swore I would never buy another Sony computer product again. Some of their stuff, especially the AR series is just so tempting. I am strongly considering the ASUS W2 series just for the fact of better speakers and the bad experience I had with Sony in the past.

    VGPEVPPS VAIO 3 year On-Site

Just ordered it, after becoming sick of shipping my SZ back and forwards.
