    Hello

I can't believe Sony downgrade my DVD Drive. Here is a timeline of what happen to my DVD Drive.

    Mid Dec 2006

    - drive was making weird noise reading cd / dvd
    - request for box from sony support (sony tech said box may take a long time because it was during christmas time)
    - no box after 1 week

    Jan 2007

    - dvd stop working! can not read dvd or cd.
    - call sony tech support and request for box for repair.
    - no box after 1 week
    - call sony tech support again request for box third time

School started and I can no longer wait for box so I just took it to the Sony Store and have them send to factory.

    Jan 20 2007

    - gave my laptop to sony store and have them send to their repair
    - 2 days after my box arrived but laptop already sent to shop

    Feb 2 2007

    - got my laptop back from sony.
    - sony wrote on paper they replace a new dvd drive (happy)
    - went to sleep (happy)

    Feb 3 2007

    - decided to update my dvd drive firmware since I have a working dvd drive now
    - fail to update and this message pop up

was kinda confuse for a sec because i was sure my SZ dvd drive was Matshita UJ-842D because I did a lot of research before I sent my laptop for repair.

    http://esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=VGNSZ360P&UpdateType=Updates

    - so i went to control panel > system > device manager and this is what I saw

Huh? Matshita UJ-832D, whats going on? Did some research online and found out 832 can not support Dual Layer DVD aka DVD9.

What should I do now? They totally rip me off!

    Please help me out!

They cannot replace the dvd drive with an inferior product. Tell them they better fix the problem in 2 hours or replace the laptop.

    Good luck

Before a few months the DVD of my SZ1XP/C has a problem. Sony solve the problem for a 3 MONTHS and replace the original drive with UJ 832D. Why they put 832 on the place of originaly shipped 842 i canoot understand. I just was happy that after 3 monts my notebook is come. This is the first and last notebook Sony, because of support ill go to Toshiba
I think that the support of Sony is terrible all around the world

You paid for a Dual Layer capable drive so you are entitled to a Dual Layer capable drive. PURSUE THIS! Do not rest until they make this right. They are counting on you to just roll over and accept it. DON'T!

even if you don't plan on burning dual layer discs (use verbatims if you do) i agree with fotogrfr that you are entitled for what you paid for. i'd call for a replacement.... or go to the sony store. be sure to bring proof

if you go by the semester then you should get your laptop back before or duing midterms and definately before finals.

    Hello

Thanks for the advance. Yes I want to gather Proof but I don't know where to start.

What should I do? Sony is really pissing me off now.

Can anyone with a SZ3xx take a screen shot of the Matshita 842 DVD Drive please.

The thing is I don't want to send my laptop away again. Its going to take another 2 weeks to fix the stupid **** thing.

    Any advice would be nice.

I unfortunately have the UJ-832D in my V6J and it does burn DVD9...Sony should however not have downgraded your DVD burner

You can start by looking at the SZ3xx specifications on sonystyle

    My SZ370P/C also has a Matshita UJ-832D.

By the way, the specs did mention that the premium SZ has 4x DVD burner while the regular SZ has 8x DVD burner....

I think Sony may not have made a mistake when Ch28Kid's drive when she sent in for repair.

According to specs that I know:

    Sony Premium SZ (360, 370, 381) comes with 4x DVD +/- R burner.
    Sony Regular SZ (320, 330) comes with 8x DVD +/- R burner.

I'm not totally sure with the specs of the Matshita (Panasonic) drives but could it be that:

Matshita UJ-832D can burn DVD up to 4x speed.
Matshita UJ-842D can burn DVD up to 8x speed.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just talk to the Sony support on the phone and they said 832 and 842 is exactly the same. (Can not find the specs anywhere and Sony tech support won't tell me the Specs... Errrr.)

If I am not happy I should sent it in for Sony Repair AGAIN!

They said my Drive was made for the TX and S series.

Sigh, I really don't know what to do now.

Hmmm...I need to do some research, but I thought that the Matshita UJ-832D could support dual layer burning and DVD9. This is copied from the Sony Style USA site. PLEASE correct me if I am wrong.

Create, edit and burn your own DVDs and present your digital video content in a professional-looking package with high-quality tools like Click to DVD® software and integrated DVD+R Double Layer/DVD±RW drive

Ch28Kid, I think you should get Sony to help you solve your problem. I'm not in a position to say whether Sony downgraded you or not when you sent in your laptop for service but the main thing for me is that they have to help you out in any way possible to make sure that the you can upgrade your firmware since you downloaded the correct DVD drive's firmware for your laptop. It just doesn't make sense to me that you have to live with your DVD drive not being able to upgrade it's firmware since it is meant for your laptop.

I think you have to decide WHY you are unhappy. If it's because you wanted a drive that supports dual-layer, but now you've discovered that the 832 does indeed support dual-layer, then there is nothing to be unhappy about.

If it's because you want (and originally purchased) a DVD drive that can burn at 8x and the replacement only burns at 4x, okay, you can be unhappy about that. But is having 8x capable really that big of a deal?

If it's because you can't apply your downloaded firmware update, well, is there a firmware update for the 832? And if not, will there be one in the future? Is updating the firmware really that big of a deal?

Personally, if the drive works and will burn dual-layer, I'd keep it and be happy. It actually might be a better drive than the 842.

Sorry to hear about the experience with support but don't let them fool u as they have a procedures to follow and sometime they don't know what they are talking. What u can do is call back and give them your previous case # and tell them u want to escalate this matter. If they refuse ask for a supervisor. Oh and remember to ask who did u talk to, get their ID #. And keep a good record for it. I agree with everyone here for their comment, "u get what u pay for", don't let them take advantage of u. Good luck and keep on fighting.

    Thank you for the response

Before I go up to Sony and argue about the problem, I want to gather my information and statistic for each drive. Here is what I got

    Matshita UJ-832D

    Reading

    • 24x CD-ROM read speed
    • 12x CD-RW read speed
    • 8x DVD-ROM read speed
    • 8x DVD+R read speed
    • 4x DVD+RW read speed
    • 4x DVD-R read speed
    • 5x DVD-RW read speed

    Writing:

    • 24x CD-R write speed
    • 10x CD-RW write speed
    • 4x DVD+R write speed
    • 2.4x DVD+RW write speed
    • 4x DVD-R write speed
    • 2.4x DVD-RW write speed
    • 2.4x DVD+RW DL write speed

    Matshita UJ-842D

    Reading

    • CD x24 read speed
    • CD-R x24 read speed
    • CD-RW x12 read speed
    • DVD x8 read speed
    • DVD-R DL x4 read speed
    • DVD-R x4 read speed
    • DVD-RW x4 read speed
    • DVD+R DL x4 read speed
    • DVD+R x4 read speed
    • DVD+RW x4 read speed
    • DVD-RAM x2 read speed

    Writing:

    • CD-R x24 write speed
    • CD-RW x10 write speed
    • DVD-R x4 write speed
    • DVD-RW x2 write speed
    • DVD+R DL x2.4 write speed
    • DVD+R x4 write speed
    • DVD+RW x2.4 write speed

Looks like I can burn DL but can not read DL

Please correct me if I am missing something!

I think your spec is missing something. ALL DVD drives can read DL disc, but not all can write one. I know this for sure since most DVD movies you rent are DL. My 6 year old DVD read only drive can read DL without any issues.

It looks something is wrong here. How come it could burn but not read +DL. Check with Nero InfoTool once again.

    http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/NeroInfoTool_403.zip

I have the same 832D drive, and it both reads&burns +R DL.

try reading a dual layer disc. it should be ok.

the matshita automatically bitsets dvdr+ media to dvdr-rom after burning. (no comments for those using the sony drive). you have dvdROM checked.

dvdr-rom is like pressed media and all current drives SHOULD be able to read dual layered pressed media. as a matter of fact many burn freaks use hacked firmwares to make burners spit out dvdROM compatible discs after the burn. luckily the matshita autobitsets to dvdrom
