ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 factory spec clock speed is between 450Mhz-650Mhz. Sony E series' ATI 5650 is indeed using 450Mhz.
Several people had tried and successfully overclocked it to 550Mhz and 650Mhz with no issues. You can follow their stories on Sony Vaio E series owner's thread on the owner's lounge sub-forum.

Sony down-clocking or essentially handicapping the components in its Notebooks is nothing new. Sony would most likely claim that to achieve the thinness in their design they need to lower the heat produced by various components to ensure that they last.

Just be aware that if you look to increase the clock speed of various components in your laptop it is possible that you could do them damage. Many people will of course claim that a small amount of over-clocking is safe. I personally have never done and never will, I trust that manufacturers set the limits on the components that they produce for a reason.

I agree, I think it's one of Sony's twisted hobby to downgrade notebook parts :D
Before making decision on the E-series, I was actually looking at the older FW-series with ATI Radeon 4650, which also downclocked for the reason only Sony knows. I am sure the FW has ample room for cooling since its not a small and thin 13" laptop
The core clockspeed of 550Mhz and 650Mhz is still within ATI Radeon 5650 specification though, and measuring it with GPU-Z came out with no significant temperature difference (I believe only 1-2 degree centigrade difference from those who already tried overclocking it in owner's lounge forum)
I guess for E-series, the decision to use lower end of the clockspeed (450Mhz) so it will not compete with the entry level F series GPU, since heat is not the issue.
Personally I haven't tried overclock my card since I don't need it yet. So far the factory clock has been satisfactory for my usage, at least for now. :)

I need to get one before may 8th. And I guess illl be so lucky that soon after alll the laptops will be updated to soemthing new again.
