Hello,
I recently purchased a brand new model of Sony Vao VPCEB1S1E/BJ from a local megastore. While the laptop is really to my liking, I am a little annoyed with the screen. I know these laptops are those "energy star" models, that save power, but the display brightness is really not bright enough, even if I change the settings to the brightest possible level. I can see everything just fine but the screen is dim.
Do you guys know if there's a way to test that the screen is funtioning as it should be (software?) or do I have to keep guessing? I don't have any expensive equipment that I could test it with but I would like to know if this is just how the models are, or if this is a fault. IF you need more info, please ask.

Well of course there could be some problem with the screen, but from my point of view I think the low res screen on EB is quite horrible in general...to tell the truth I also thought that it must be broken piece in Sony Center.
I'm not familiar with recent ATI GPU, but did u try to play with it's settings? There should be something like digital vibrancy, which should help you out a bit.
I don't think there's a sw for testing brightness as every laptop is different. Try to go to take a look at another EB in your local store and compare it with yours -
Thanks for the response! I'm pretty torn between thinking it's a fault and letting it go. It's ALMOST bright enough but not really. It gets very annoying especially at night when other lights are on around the house and the display appears so dark. I played around with the ATI Control Center Settings but setting the brightness higher from there only made it "too high" (the display become unclear, yet not really brighter). Is this what you meant?
I'll have a look at other models but unfortunately this specific model was behind a glass window and it's not possible to "test it" as it's brand new. -
here's screenshots on the basic sony settings for the brightest display settings, with two diffrent desktop backrounds.

Nope, the Nvidia card has something called Digital Vibrancy under the Adjust Desktop Colour Settings' tab of the nVidia Control Panel. Some ppl with the cheap version of F reported (subjectively) better brightness after playing with that. But as I said, I don't know about ATI.
I can't get any info about your brightness from your screens, as on my screen it's pretty bright
If you have chance, go to the local store, preferably with your EB, put it next to each other with full brightness and same wallpaper and compare it. I think that's the only way how you can be sure, if something is wrong with your particular model. -
Thanks again for your response
I tweaked the saturation a little bit, which made the display a little bit clearer to read but I will visit the store on Wednesday and have a look at other models similar to this one and their brightness. As you said, it's probably just the way this display is, which is a shame as otherwise it's a damn good laptop
-
Yep, it's a shame...especially for Sony which is well known to use nice quality displays. Good luck, hopefully you'll find some solution for your otherwise perfect notebook

Hey,
Sorry for being little bit of topic, but do you happen to know how to change a key function in Sony Vaio E?
When I am trying to push SHIFT+2 to get @---- I am getting this ". In addition to that there are some other keys that do not function properly.
any solutions? -
Well, is the @ printed on "2" key? I have it next to "P" key. If so, it's possible you need to install different layout of your keyboard. If it's not printed there and it's just your subjective preference, you can remap the whole keyboard with some app. I'm quite sure you'll find some on Google
-
yeap it is printed on 2.
but is it possible to play with computers settings in order to get the proper function? -
Well, I'm sorry I'm not familiar with US keyboard, but I think you could try to play with keyboard layout. Check which one do you have now and try to change it to the which you think it should be.
In case you don't know the procedure, right click "Standard PS/2 Keyboard" in device manager under keyboard and choose Properties, switch to Driver tab, click [Update Driver...] button, choose [Browse my computer for driver software], click on the bottom [Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer], uncheck the "Show compatible hardware", then finally choose the right one from the list on the right side, click [Next] button and choose [Yes] when warning pops up. -
the problem is solved!!!
