You should be able to configure your virtual PC to allocate RAM. I've got 4GB by my XP Mode is only set for 512MB.

Navigate to your Virtual Machines folder and select the VM in question. Along the top of the window will appear "settings". Select "settings" and then "Memory". What is allocated there?

When you navigate to your Vitual Machines user folder in Win7, it will list the virtual machines you have installed. You could have multiple configurations if you wanted. One for each virtual hard drive (I think).

When you highlight the virtual machine, you can then choose Settings on the menu bar and assign the RAM

Configure firewire and USB for the XP mode? There's an update that may aleady be included in Win7Pro to enable integration features. This will allow your XP Mode to gain access to hardware on the laptop. Once it's installed and integration is enabled, you'll be able to click USB from the menu bar and attach/release different connections.

For example, I only us XP Mode when I want to scan in 35mm film with my Nikon Scanner. The Nikon software doesn't support Win7 and I can't bear to pay for software that can't make full use of the scanner's hardware. When I plug the scanner into Win7, it can't install the drivers for it and it gives an error. While my virtual machine is running, I can click the USB dropdown and select the film scanner to be attached. It disconnects it from Win7 and then connects it to my XP Mode et voila! It works.

Yes, you'll have to enable VR in BIOS.
