I have a VPCF11S1E and yesterday I left my vaio on without being plugged in, so it put himself 'asleep'. I couldn't turn him on but did the battery out-holding-on-button-plug-in-push-on-battery-in-trick and it worked. But since then I have a major problem.
My fan is going crazy and it seems like I have over 9000 programs on ().
From when i completely shut of my vaio, my fan starts (loudly) when I hit the log-in page and never stops until I shut it off or put him in standby, when I start my vaio from standby, it takes +30 seconds before my fan starts again loudly. It keeps blowing loudly even when I don't run any programs. It's just very annoying.
So what should I do?
P.S. I still have my warranty, I only have him 1 month. So it isn't probably dust in my fan, because I've only worked on a clean desk.

It sounds to me like something got reset in the system firmware. Have you tried going into the BIOS and confirming the set values, or updating the BIOS by chance? After trying that, if that still doesn't work, try un-installing, then re-installing the core Sony software, like the Firmware Extension Parser Device Driver and the Sony Notebook Utilities. If that doesn't fix your problem, try a Linux live CD and see if it behaves the same under Linux. If so, then you will have to send it in for service because it has a firmware problem. If it doesn't ramp up the fan under Linux, then we know it's something inside your Windows installation that's corrupt.
EDIT: Alternatively, look at the photo below. That is a screenshot from the Vaio Control Center. Balanced mode will bring your fan speeds down, but make your notebook run a little warmer, but not much hotter than it currently is. Performance ramps fan speeds up to dissapate more heat. Performance mode is for when you know you'll be pegging out the processor usage, or playing video games, or generally anything that will intensely stress your notebook.
-
K thx for the reply, ill see what i can do.
EDIT: It is in balanced mode, but the fan speed doesn't change when i change the mode or play video games... -
i think this is problem with all vaios
i have set my vaio on power saver and still fan is noisy
sometimes is quiet it behave how it wants ...
but best is to check processes and see where or which process takes most of cpu usageAttached Files:

-
Also make sure you aren't on the High Performance power profile. By default that forces the CPU to 100% speed constantly, and it isn't allowed to idle or downclock.
-
hi, i have VGN-FW21E and the fan is also loud, i was told that this is a vaio issue. I've cleaned the fan but nothing has changed!
-
K it may be a vaio issue but before my laptop put himself 'asleep' i had a complete silent fan. Now it is like this...
Do you think I should him sent back to the dealer? or leave it? -
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
Onrust did you check the temperature reported? I'm thinking there's the temperature sensor which checks how hot it is, and the fan is switched on once the threshold is exceeded. If the sensor is faulty, then the fan goes crazy. If it's a sensor problem, it'll probably become a manufacturer warranty issue.

Is this normal?

I was wondering if the original poster has found any help for this issue. I have the same problem. A few weeks ago the fan just started going at 100% all the time, even at start up. The temps are find all around 40c or lower.

Hi To_No_End,
I've hit exatly the same issue, and the it started with the same battery draining and restarting issue. I tried your steps, but don't think I'm understanding properly. Would you mind setting them out really clearly so a dumb fella like me can understand. I'd really appreciate it as this fan noise is starting to drive me nuts.

@RAH
Check the F11 owner thread for more details and JoeBLeau's pics on how to unplug the CMOS battery for the fan @100% issue. There is a very good fix. What you have to do is open the RAM coverplate at the underside of your laptop. Next to the ram is the CMOS battery wired to a removable plug. Carefully uplug it and wait for a minute. Plug it back up and start your computer. It should be good as new. -

Thanks To No End for the reference. -
I have Vaio F115FM/B and my Fan is Loud and this problem injure me that I can Hear it's working .
Please explaine more for me for prevent from this problem .

Did you go to the esupport page for your model & updated the BIOS?
Are you saying that your fan is NOT stuck in high speed but you just find it too loud for your taste? -
Is this loud Fan Normal At all in all of this series ?!
Now Can this way that you show in this picture solve this problem and quite the Fan ?!!
and Is there any update or software for solve this problem of loud fan ?!
Thanks -
You have a powerful quad core i7-720QM with a TDP of 45W + a powerful video card so it needs cooling and yes, the fan works all the time, more with demanding tasks.
Maybe you would be better served with a less powerful laptop for less fan work & better battery life. The F is a muscle car.
All brands of notebooks with quad core i7-720QM need fan work to keep cool.
So no, the CMOS reset will not change the characteristics of your laptop. That repair tip is just for machines that have their fan stuck at 100% speed.

Hey guys,
I had the same problem with the disturbing sound coming from the fan working at full speed in my VAIO VPCF115FM after windows update, and I am also in Brazil, so returning it to the store is a huge deal for me.
So I tryed everything there is on the net on the subject and nothing seemed to work. I am no expert in computers, but intuition has helped me a lot, so I guess the problem has been solved. Please try to follow my brief instructions here and kindly let me know if it works for you guys as well.
1. Press CRTL+SHIFT+ESC and go to the windows task manager.
2. Click on the Performance TAB
3. Find the Resource Monitor at the bottom and click on it.
4. Once in there, find the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service and right click on it.
5. Choose suspend service and confirm.
You will notice that the Maximum CPU Frequency should drop from 105% to aroung 60% immediately and the overheat will stop. The fan speed will be a lot lower and the noise will be gone.
Ok, so if you identify this was your problem, next step is to stop this service from starting with windows.
1. Click on start and open msconfig
2. At the System Configuration choose the Services Tab.
3. Find and uncheck the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
4. Apply the changes and restart the computer.
You fan noise problem should be solved.
On the downside you won't be able to share the media through the Windows Media Player on you network. I hope Microsoft and Sony can find a way to solve this in a near future.
Hope it helps you.
Regards.

Hi, guys -
Now I want to know that is your fan Quite Now in all position like in playing Media or in Game or in Heavy software ? Is it quite at all and You Can't Hear The Fan's Working ?
and Another Question that Why Memory Usage is 1.33 GB in normal mood that Any Program is not Running ? See the Below Picture :
Thanks and Keep Going to Find another Way
Thank you Again -
The same thing happens when you're using other kinds of software that can tax the CPU and GPU like autocad, adobe, maya etc.
The fan working hard to cool down the computer when you're using these programs is a good thing because you want the consistent performance in the first place. The noise is a compromise.
I've watched movies or have gone to websites where the fan would be silent at one moment and then speed up the next though it's not that loud and after a while I got used to it.
There's a chance that you have a program running in the background that you're not aware of that's making your fan work harder even when idle. -
Curious: why do you always post in bold? -
for Showing My Reply perfectly
-
It is very strange that there is no way to quite Fan But a way should be exist to solve this problem , I can't Believe it that There is no Way for this problem .
-
Can you post a sound clip of the fan noise you're talking about when it's idle, browsing the internet, or when playing a movie? The idea is to compare what others hear on their computers and determine if it this is a situation where it's more about relative tolerance to noise than a real issue.
Let's say the fan is louder than what everyone else is experiencing. There are some steps to help focus in on the issue. In this case, in the following order:
1. Corrupted BIOS resulting in Fan at 100% full blast - Did your laptop crash or run out of battery? Did plugging the laptop to the adapter and turning the laptop on take several tries to get it to work but resulting in the fan running hard non-stop? IF so, reset the Bios following JoeBleau's steps to unplug/replug the CMOS battery in the memory bay.
2. Background software running discreetly - This one is tricky as it could be one or a number of programs installed that's causing it. There is also a possibility that a program was corrupted at some point in time or that you may have some kind of virus/malware that's hidden and running?
Probably the fastest way to find out is to first backup any important data that you have into another drive and then do a full system restore to factory settings. Without installing any new software yet, this will rule out a software issue and point to the BIOS update if the fan is still running abnormally.
NOTE: I suggest performing the CMOS battery reset first to rule that possibility out because when I had the fan@100% issue and initiated a full systems restore, the fan still ran at 100%.
3. BIOS update - It maybe possible that Sony set the new fan instruction to spin faster at a much lower temperature to ensure no overheating occurs. There is not much you can do about this other than talk to Sony and complain about the noise. They'll either ask you to send the laptop for repair or replacement or you can discuss the possibility of a refund (if it is the case of the BIOS update) since the fan speed/noise was not an issue at the time of purchase. Also, since you've already updated the BIOS firmware there's no going back to the original firmware.
EDIT: By the way, what 'other' laptops did you mention that you're comparing the fan noise to? It's like what Joe Bleau said, the i7-720qm is a powerful quad core processor. If you are comparing it to a core2duo laptop then of course the F is noisy. Undestandably the comparison is there since many of us made that jump to the i7 using the core2duo as a reference but it is ultimately an unfair comparison. -
Thank you very much for you Information
I can't Record it But The sound is like the Fan Sound in this Clip :
YouTube - Vaio F Series Whining, High Pitch, Morse Code Fix VPCF115FM
But My meaning is not the noise sound Becasue I already solved it with disabling recorder I mean The man's Laptop Fan Sound , My Fan's sound is like This .
But Because Of that I am very Sensitive this sound injure me very much .
But Now Can you record you fan's sound that I can Compare it with my Laptop's Fan Sound ?
Thanks -
I made that mic fix video clip.
The mic was directly on the keyboard & set to maximum sensivity. If you can ear that as loud from a normal working position then send your unit for repair or return it for refund.
My F115FM's soundscape is absolutely normal considering the power under the hood and the demanding tasks I run on it.
Again, I suggest you get a less powerful machine with an i5 CPU. For example: i5 produces 35W max and i7-720QM 45W so imagine a 10W light bulb, that's the extra heat that the fan on your computer has to evacuate. And that's not talking about the GPU.
Go to notebookcheck.net & check several reviews of different brand/models of laptops with a quad core i7 CPU. They always include a sound emission graph made with professional recording tools.
The F is not any different compared to similar configured laptops. Bring your laptop in a store and compare apples to apples but not to a Macbook Pro 17 that has only a dual core CPU + discrete graphic & trades fan work for much higher temperatures & cost almost twice the price.
-
Actually When I turn on laptop the Fan is quite and Core temp is 49' But after some works it increase to 57' and Fan make loud sound and Heat and it never decrease to 49' or 50' when Laptop is in idle status . -
Have you tried all the steps noted in earlier posts? if so and the sound still bothers you then exchange it for a different notebook. -
Compare to two tests & temperatures made by these Envy_17 i7 CPU's owners here and here: up to 97c. -
Maybe the Bios Update didn't complete clearly , Now Can I Update it Again over than last update Again ?!!!
-
typical problem on f11 series of vaio.lots of my friends sent their notebooks to guaranty but there is no result.sony made a bios update to reduce the fan voice , but i became a history
doesn't working
-
We are talking about a quad i7 @ 45W here & you have a duo core i5 @ 35W per your sig.
And no, it's not "typical". -
Good information and thank you for the CMOS trick. My fan also keeps going and going to no end. This after the firmware update and a few Windows updates. All current. It was very quiet beforehand. Unfortunate.
-
I asked you here in the F owner's thread for essential troubleshooting data to which you did not reply yet. w/o info about system usage & real rpm, it's stabbing in the dark. I will reply in thst thread if you post the info.
F users reported problems with some Windows updates, it would not be the first time. You could go back to before those updates with a restore point if you have some.
Start in Safe Mode (boot & hit F8): is the fan speed the same? If not, it rules out hardware & BIOS.
BTW, if you liked the CMOS tip, some feedback is appreciated by clicking on thisthat you can see in the left column of a post.

Has anyone tried a cooling pad - or whatever the heck those things are called - for the fan noise problem? They have fans too, but a big slow low-pitched fan might be worthwhile if it knocks the whiney VAIO fan down some.
-
Thank you!! This did it for me...It was AppleMobile in the processes...it was only taking about 15% but that quieted the fan when I ended that process.
-
Has anybody tried to enabel the hidden bios options?
There are 3 submenus regarding Thermal Configuration.
