I saw the Sony FE550 at Best Buy tonight and I was really impressed. It is 1549.99. I went to sonystyle.com and could not find any info on the fe550, they only had the fe590. whats the deal here? Why is the 550 not mentioned anywhere but for sale at Best buy? I was considering picking this up at best buy but I'm skeptical since I can't find any info on it.

Usually in bestbuy they use custom configured units or units that don't match the specs that sonystyle.com has (such as putting in a bigger hard drive or more memory) so they have to deviate a little from the number assignment.

I believe that's what happens, but Im not too sure.. this is just some speculation b/c when I look at the gateway models in bestbuy they don't sell the exact same model on gateway.com but they are still the same spec wise just maybe a different size harddrive.

I must go to bestbuy tomorrow and check out the FE.. I wonder if they'll ahve the SZ on display

My Circuit City just got the FE550G in, shipments to other stores could vary.

a double layer drive means you can burn a dvd on two sides. like the DVD movies that come with a widescreen and regular format on one disc. also DVDRW drives can burn CD's alongside dvd's. also checked sonystyle.com to see if the FE's do have that and yeah they do. hope that helps a bit.

It's not actually two sides; there are two layers of burnable media on one side, and one is translucent. The laser to write and to read is able to focus on each layer, so you get twice as much space on a DVD, more or less.

And if I read your query correctly, penguinboy, every DVDRW drive is also a CDRW.

Had some hands-on with this lappy at BB this evening and it is one awesome machine. Absolutely beautiful. If it had a dedicated graphics card I would have bought it on the spot and cancelled my SZ order.
