Well, I was all set to mark a checkbox next to the Sony FS as my first new notebook...and then I started coming across reviews from users who all had the same thing to say: Great screen, horrific battery.

Apparently the battery, listed at 5.5 hours, lasts 2 at the most, 1.5 more typically.

Has anyone seen this? Is this an unavoidable side effect of Sonoma?

I highly doubt that it would be Sonoma's fault. Sonoma is obviously the next generation of Centrino, and Centrino was built to have more battery life...and I have not seen people with other Sonoma notebooks complaining about battery life.

Ballin4life, actually the sonoma core consumes 6 more Watts than the old. But yes that would not explain such a huge difference in battery life, cause Sony should factor in any increase or decrease in power consumption, especially that the FS is a new line and thus never had the option for an old centrino platform.
Maybe this model has issues, maybe there are software issues with the software that manages cpu and fsb speeds when running on battery life. It wouldn't be a first for sony, it happened to me a couple of years ago, but they soon fixed it with a patch!
To make sure have someone from the people who have claimed such low battery life, get a software that messures cpu speed and fsb real time, and let them check the speeds when unpluged. this should help narrow down where the problem is!

NOTE: claimed battery lifes are usually measured at lowest cpu/fsb speeds attainable, and with LOWEST BRIGHTNESS! + no optical drive activity, and light usage, NOT 100% cpu and 100% of the time HDD usage.
