I all I was just wondering if any other Sony FW owners are having this problem. It seems like the bottom of the screen is lit more brightly than the rest of the machine, regardless of viewing angle. Is this a inherent design flaw, or should I go exchange it?

Is this noticeable on all levels of brightness?

Is it noticeable only with dark colors or all colors?

It becomes less obvious on darker settings obviously but its super noticeable if there is a black letterbox, for example if you're watching an anamorphic DVD like star wars.

I have my FW at the brightest level, because I generally run off plugged in power, and my screen is evenly lit across the entire screen and up and down. I find the screen to be a true pleasure to use.

I might have an exceptionaly good screen or you may have bad one. I do tend to find corners or low light areas to work because I enjoy the bright contrastly colors.

It is possible that your screen may just need more time to Burn in. I would use it as often as possible and see if it gets better over time.

    Good luck.

What do you think of the eco screen! Is it as bright as LED screens, or equivalent notebooks on the market?

All 4 of the FWs with Eco screens I've seen (in 2 different Sony stores) have had terrible vertical viewing angles. In all 4 cases the SRs sitting next to them looked much, much better.

I bought my unit at Best Buy, it's a VGN FW139E, so yes, it has the Eco screen.

Maybe the folks who think the screen is bad are looking at the MS background which fades out at the edges. If I expand this page (which is light colored and bright) so that it fills the entire screen, I do NOT see any shadows or areas where the color is weak.

The entire screen is bright and richly colored. There might be some bad screens out there or the screens need to burn in but I'm happy to say that my ECO screen is a thing of beauty. It is also very nice to have so much useable work space.

I have the settings set to max resolution and brightness.

    I'm running on a 139E/H right now...

Screen looks great to me. Evenly lit, etc. My only concern is that I usually run screens on 1/2 or 3/4th brightness out of some obtuse idea that it helps preserve the backlight. On my 139, only the highest or next highest really is comfortable. Those brightness settings are fine, I just hope they don't dim over time.

Here is a photo, not the best picture quality....

This was taken in my living room on a sunny, hot California afternoon. I have my legs up on the coffee table with my FW on my lap.

I have the same problem. Bottom part of the screen is much brighter so black turns into grey.

Do you think I have to wait the screen to burn? Actually I didn't know that screens needed to burn!

I bought it at Bestbuy. I have an Eco screen.

You can only notice this while watching a film. There is a strong backlight coming from the botton of the screen making the band turns grey, and a lighter backlight coming from the up corners.

I don't have a camera to show it!

It's a shame that retailers don't sell an FW with a HiColor screen.

I have the exact problem jorchz has. Regardless of viewing angle, the black fades at the bottom and top of the screen. It looks like there is light coming up from the bottom of the screen.

I've just bought this machine and am going to return it for this reason. It's not that I can't live with the annoyance. It's just that this machiine was touted for watching movies on and they charge so much more for the HiColor. It's like they are making the standard screen crap just to sell the HiColor.

They should really put an asterick next to the model on their website:

*By the way, unless you shell mucho dinero for the HiColor you will be spending 1300 on a crappy screen for movies.

Can anyone suggest a replacement for me?

    I need:

at least 16 inch screen that is good for watching movies. I don't game. I want at least 2.0 ghz or faster processor, 4 gigs of ram to run a 64 bit vista. I also want a quiet, cool machine.

I have ruled out hp 16Xt because it is very loud. I've heard the screen on the dell studio 17 is crap. I've heard the dell XPS studio16 runs super hot. Any 16 or 17 inch screens for 1300 or lower that are great for watching movies besides these models?
