Hi there I have a Sony vaio FW21M

it has the mata bd-mlt uj230as basically the blu-ray drive......

I was wondering if anyone has the correct driver for this because I can't seem to play any blurays and can't burn anything with it, it just works like a normal dvd drive, does nothing else

I did a clean install so i need the firmware, I tried all the links on this forum and can only find the UPDATE for the driver not the original install.......... thank you

Check the Sony site under your original OS it was shipped with - they had both a firmware update and registry patch for when Windows does not recognize the disc/drive.
Also check then for your version of WIN 7 - there is an update Posted 12/3 with another patch to help the drive be recognized with WIN 7 upgrades.

Strange, what burning software are you trying to use?

Sorry, was away for a few days - you did a clean install, what procedures did you follow, Sony has instructions on their site for WIN 7 upgrade and the drivers and order thereof.
Did your installation go OK, are any other drivers/special buttons not working properly?
Seems odd, that just the CD/DVD/BD drive does not function.

Hi that's ok, you have been really helpful

i just did a clean install on my own, then installed all the drivers that were on sony's website for windows 7, vista and upgrade.....

all my drivers work properly, i just can't seem to get the dvd/bd not functioning

and i can't seem to install 'click to disc'

that's all, all the buttons seem to be working except for the av mode button, but i don't really use that anyway.........

    thanks again!!

Does your action center icon (small flag in right hand taskbar) have any messages/issues etc?
Mine (a FW285) picked up the BD drive just fine, did have problems with one software not wanting to recognize the drive, but tried another and it worked fine (ImgBurn). Suggest you try loading it, it will load once initiated and post a small log at the bottom of the screen. If shows "found 1 BD-RE" then your drive is working, we just need to sort thru why WIN 7 won;t see it.
    Here's the link:

Also check your events logs --> Windows Orb, search line and type in "event logs", hit enter.
Next screen will pop up the event viewer, expand windows logs, then system. See if any errors listed (will be a red circle with ! mark and "error" - see if your CD.DVD drive is listed.

Hey thanks very much for your reply

I used imgburn and it does show the Found 1 Blu-RE

and the events log doesn't show any errors for my dvd drive

but i really cant seem to burn any dvds

like, when i enter a blank dvd, initialise it to burn a dvd, it can't even do that, it gives me an error and then the disc becomes unburnable after that......

    thanks once again

Traveling again - sorry for the delay - Try this to see what tells you:
Control Panel, Action Center, Troubleshooting, hardware and Sound, configure a device - run the application and see what it tells you.
Have you tried other DVDs besides the ones currently using? Any chance the DVDs could be faulty? Are they new, have you burned the same ones prior to the upgrade?
