    What happens when you BOOT from the first of the recovery disks?

    This is precisely why many of us here suggest folks stay the hell away from ALL registry cleaners and so called optimizers. They are snake oil. There is one and only one reason to use a registry cleaner, that I have ever found. That was to remove some entries for a driver that prevented a fresh install of the driver. They have a place when trying to fix a specific problem, but there is no need to use them as part of any regular maintenance or optimization.

    Ditto with ScuderiaConchiglia. Registry cleaners for me are bad news, full stop. I usually just search for whatever key I'm after and edit away from there. But then, I know what I'm doing...

    Though curious. Modding the registry shouldn't affect the recovery partition or the installation of a new recovery drive via the recovery discs...? Unless the registry edits you've done caused the machine to do something permanent affecting the recovery drive. Or worst case scenario, forcing the hardware to do something it wasn't meant to do.

    Anyways, when you see the VAIO screen when first starting your machine, press F10. That should start up the recovery partition's OS and relevant recovery tools. Though that's provided your recovery drive is still intact and alive. Though that doesn't explain why the discs are working.

    EDIT: On hindsight, I recall there being some users where their recovery discs did not work for some reason. This despite the VAIO RECOVERY CENTRE (the Sony software that prompts you to make the said discs at first boot) saying the disc burning process / verification was successful. Which is why I as do some other individuals suggest creating 2x pairs of recovery media instead of just one, using high quality blanks (Verbatim being a good choice).

    @Davaz
    Have you tried clean installing an OS or is that out of the question?
