Ok, here's my thought about the Nvidia 8 cards:

    1. 8400GS is far better than the 8400G by having double number of pipelines (16 vs 8), which means better image quality but performances may be almost the same (except FPS).

    2. 8400GT is far better than the 8400GS by having double memory speed at 128bit vs 64bit. Both the FPS and memory bandwidth are hugely increased while the GT will come with 256Mb instead of the max 128Mb in the GS cards.

    3. 8600GS is only better than the 8400GT because all the core and the shader processors are extremely overclocked !! and i'm backing my statement by comparing the speeds with the 8600GT which has normal clock speeds.

    4. 8600GT.. well.. 32 pipelines.. the best.. nuff said !!

About a year ago I was considering the FZ series, but did not purchase due to the lack of good speakers.
Comparing the speakers to the HP that I had at the time with the Harmon Kardon speakers the FZ sucked.
When the volume was at the highest level in FZ it was about the same as the quarter level of the HP 6000 model.

    Did they change the speakers?
    Are they better now?
    How is the sound levels?
    Any info will be appreciated.

you're extremely right here about the HP sound. I have a 15" Compaq NX9000 series with JBL Pro speakers and I can assure you, I have real bass and high volume on it. I think the weight-loss trend led to sound-loss trend first of all, because the speakers are pretty heavy. I won't count on great sound in any non-business laptops from now on.. :(

he said he was considering last year, not seeing it :)
that's why he asked in the end of his message if Sony changed that..

    Oops, my bad.
I just did the research and found out that I actually was talking about the FE or FS series that were being sold last year (can not exactly recall the model name).

I don't know if they are still on sale or not, but how do the speakers compare with the FZ series.
I am a nutjob on speakers, because I usually use them for hours daily (can not use headphones due to many reasons). Are they any better than the FS series?

I have seen the configurations on sonystyle.com and the FZ series does have very good processors and video card, and right now I am again considering them.

Any input will be appreciated about the speakers.

Ugh!... Why don't you just connect good speakers? Laptop built-ins are generally going to be pretty crappy. Some are just crappier than others, that's all.

True enough, although I have to admit, the sound quality on the speakers in the HP laptops is really quite good.

Well the problem is I can not lug around more weight with me everywhere I go :)

Carrying a 6lb laptop plus other crap while flying is hassle enough, and with the speakers it will be additional weight that does not make life easier.

I guess I will visit the sony shop early in the morning to test out the speakers when there is not much noise in the mall.

I just love the fact that the new FZ has 256mb dedicated video.
Even though I said no to Sony due to my very bad experience with a desktop years back, i am seriously considering a sony laptop.

does anyone have any info on the large capacity batteries for the sony vaio fz (model # BPL8 for the battery)? i've heard different things about the rated vs real battery life of this battery. any info?

also, MORE IMPORTANTLY, what does this battery look like when it is in the laptop? went to the sony store but the people that work there didn't even know about the large capacity batteries. does any have any photos? is it going to be similar to the large capacity batteries of the previous F? models (eg. FE, etc)? if so, does anyone have any pictures of the bigger batteries in those models (for comparison)?

thanks in advance for any info.

The FZ190 will not be available in Canada. For some reason, Sony Canada does not think that Canadians like to customize our notebooks. If you are interested in buying the FZ190 CTO, you have to purchase it from Sony USA. That is what I decided to do and will pick up my notebook at the end of this month.

The FZ140 is still on the Canadian website.

thanks for the reply. that's a bit of a piss off.

I'm just not down with buying something that will incur a mystery amount of customs.

The FZ180 is available in Canada and comes with the 8400M GT gpu. You can always swap out the 4200 rpm drive for a faster 7200 rpm.

This could be a great time for new owners to share with owners to-be how best to create useful system backups and how to get rid of all the unecessary bloatware. From XP I know it is very hard to get program remains out of the registry. Though I doubt it, would Vista make cleansing the computer of junk easier and more complete?
