    I Just bought a Sony FZ17G (australia)

First and foremost, it came with standard 1GB of ram so i asked them to install another 1GB stick whilst i went and paid for it. Got home and booted the sony and went through the first boot up bollocks that most people will have to go through. Once that was done, a pop up came up showing my system specs and to my surprise it said 1gb of ram - not two!

I thought this was wierd. So I powered down and had a look on the underside. Yep! Definitely two sticks of ram. I've installed ram in my desktop before and it worked straight off the bat. The funny thing is, my mate also bought the exact same laptop today as me and also got an upgrade of ram and he too has problems! Is there something about vista i should know about (this is the first time ive come across vista). The bios is not even detecting it...
Faulty sticks for my mate and I? Any help on this would be great as to return it back to the shop is a waste of my time and I just dont have that much free time to spare.

Everything else on the Laptop is great. looks great, runs silent even the look and touch of it impresses me wholeheartedly, just this little quirk has been a bit of a downer.

Just because there are two sticks in there doesn't mean it's 2gb total. It could be 512mb x 2. Go into the BIOS and find out for sure how much RAM is installed and go from there.

one of them actually said 1gb of ram. The other one is also 1gb.
cause when only it was in, it said 1GB
    Bios only ever said 1gb....
I took them out and only had one in at a time. it seemed like one of the slots was dead because I swapped them around just then and it was cool but if I only had one in a particular slot it wouldn't even get to bios.
So it seemed to me anyway like it was a slot issue as opposed to a stick issue. I tried all combinations, and that was the common factor in the failed booting. What the!!?

haha on a side note how do i disable the mousepads.

Anyone else have this problem or know of anything I could do. Will I need to update anything, firmware wise?

    heh, anything?

above just to quote you mate.
if it came with one gb you did not have one stick of 1gb. you originally had 2 x 512. it s also very irregular if the installed stick said 1gb of ram written on and the other slot had a stick of ram in that was just for show.
you wanna revisit that shop gizza,

    Hi guys,

I have the same problem (bought the laptop at the same store, same time as Zensen) and it IS a vaio problem, not a 2 x512mb problem. After discovering the issue, this is what I did to test it out

pull open laptop, see 2 ram sticks in two modules
pull out one ram chip, go to bios, 1gb ram detected
pull that ram chip out, put the other chip in, computer doesn't even get to bios
ok.. maybe a dead ram chip
put ram chip originally in slot B into slot A, boots to bios, 1GB
put ram chip originally in slot A into slot B, won't boot to bios

both ram chips boot to bios and show 1gb in ram slot A, neither of them even get to bios when placed in slot B

This is not a 2 x 512mb issue, its a slot failure in the vaio, sounds alot like this http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=100183

Is this a common thing with vaio's?

Doesn't it strike you as odd that the only two folks who have reported this issue both bought the same machine and the same memory at the same store??? I don't think this is common thing with Vaio's at all.

Were you there when the tech at the store installed the additional memory? Did they have any difficulty installing the second stick? It almost sounds as if they might have damaged the socket in some way.

    This really is odd.

yeah it is really odd Gary. The store isn't in the goodbooks with me at the moment as they said (which they should have done) that they put in the memory, booted to bios, saw 2GB and closed it all up. However, booting to bios myself clearly shows 1GB, and has never shown more. Unless of course they have this magical thing where they only recognise the second slot on the first, ever, boot /sarcasm

Am going to go back in my lunch break and beat them over the head, will keep this thread updated

well, my tests at home must have been wrong, cause the problem turned out that they put the wrong ram type in the comp. 5minutes with the techs, the right ram type later and 2GB is showing up. Moral of the story, never walk out of a shop if they've done work on a system without confirming it first
