I recently purchased a Sony FZ 290 CTO with the lowest 120gig/4200 rpm hard drive. This is pretty slow so I'm looking to upgrade the drive myself to something thats 7200 rpm. They told me on the phone that this will void the warranty...is this true? For those that have done it, is there a sticker that must be torn (or something along those lines) that indicates that the drive was removed?

Also, is the drive type Serial ATA150?

    Thanks for any help.

It won't void your warranty completely, it will only void the warranty on your HD.

Thanks for the response. What about the type of hard drive, is it a SATA ATA150?

I know its SATA, but is it the 150 or 300 speed? I don't see this info written anywhere and I don't know if buying the wrong type makes a difference.

My FZ190 has a ST9160821AS. From that you may be able to find out if it is 300 or 150. (I suspect it is 150 but do NOT know for sure.)

Yes, its 150 based on the model. The 300 ends in ASG. Thanks!

I'm thinking of buying an vaio fz and doing the same exact thing down the line... is the fz hard drive relatively easy to access? pls let us know how the swap goes -- hopefully the sony bios will be friendly (I heard the HP bios is not friendly at all). good luck!
