I just got received refurbished FZ290 w/ BluRay and I am amazed at the build quality. Things on it look like they perfectly fit together and I don't see any obvious imperfections. It looks like MacBook build quality and I am pleased. With Dell XPS 1530 it still felt like a budget notebook with a pretty paint (which is not even on the edges) and slick looks, but gaps and crappy touchpad buttons among other things just didn't do it for me. Noise levels are also lower on FZ.

The only downside in my book is the keyboard, it looks like it hasn't changed since I had my first SZ laptop, but I am sure it has fans. I still prefer Acer, Dell type of keyboard.

As much as Dell is always tempting for ease of ordering, service, and usually cheap prices, I don't think I can ever order from them again. I see a lot of Dells and their build quality is always bad. But hey, they're usually cheaper except for the newer XPS line.

The FZ might look nice (build) outside. But it's actually very delicate. I had it for 5 months and already the lid is not closing properly, the dvd drive touches the table surface when open.

Hopefully that won't happen to me. Using it for 6 months and have no problems yet...That being said, I do think laptop quality in general is dropping down lately - and I am pretty sure intense competition for lower price is culprit. I looked at friend's 7+ years old Toshiba - no laptops today (maybe aside from Panasonic) have that kind of build. :(

Woodgypsy , you are all right but don't you think laptops are all disposable?

I think they be disposable cause tech changes very very fast these days.
