I bought a FZ11S from ebay a few days ago, the owner had a graphics issue with it, i thought it would be a LCD error but i have tested the screen, and the inverter on another laptop and it seems to work fine. It looks like the graphics card on the board has gone or is going, as im getting greay matrix style lines down the screen. I have read that you are unable to repair/replace a graphics card on the vaios..

    Here is my dilema ..

1: Pay upwards of £250 for a new mother board, but keep the laptop?
2: Scrap it and sell the parts off one by one and try and recover some of the cost i paid?

also can anyone suggest a really dureable laptop?

    Many thanks
    Martyn

    Hi,

I recommend that you scrap it. This is my personal opinion though, and others may differ. If your board has gone, the chances are that other things may start to go wrong as well.

By durable do you mean something that will put up with everyday wear and tear, something that you can throw around a room, or something in between?

If you want something you can drop, spill stuff on and not worry about the consequences, then you could always consider a durabook.

Not in the case of the FZ. The only known common failure point is the Nvidia chip problem. And this failure is not indicative of anything else about to go wrong at all. Trouble is that failure requires a complete motheboard swap.

I never recommend buying scrap parts laptops... but since youve already done so, maybe its worth it do the motherboard swap and use the laptop for 1-2 years and then purchase a new one. Vaios rarely have the failing nvidia gpu issue compared to many other brands, so the replacement board should be fine...
