Firstly, it's 5 months out of warranty.

The screen sometimes goes blank. I then need to either move the screen lid up and down or restart the machine in order for the screen to come back on.

can this problem be fixed easily? any ideas what the problem is?

    thanks.

Might be the ribbons which carry power from the lower half to the screen. They sometimes erode and could be responsible for the symptoms you describe.

I received a Dell Latitude a bit back (C840, I believe) that had that problem right out of the box on the third boot-up. Its replacement developed the same problem (but also sometimes color distortions and strained images, as in through a strainer) but a few years later.
