Hey guys I've been reading the forums for awhile and recently just got Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. I ran the upgrade advisor from Microsoft.com and like many others I have the issue that my graphics card is not compatible with Windows 7. The laptop came with an NVIDIA 8400m GT graphics card. Has anyone got this to work as of yet? I know Sony is being jerks about releasing the drivers. I don't want to upgrade to Windows 7 until I have all the kinks worked out mainly because I use my laptop as my blu-ray player. Thanks guys!

Oh and I forgot to mention, right now I am running windows vista ultimate. I'm also currently on nvidia driver 186.91 and still having issues with the upgrade advisor telling me the graphics card is not compatible. All of my other devices are showing up as compatible.

I had the same warning and did an inplace upgrade anyway, ignoring the warning. Win7 installed a driver of it's own choosing during the upgrade. See my signature line for a link to my notes on the upgrade. Before you start just make sure you have a good partition image so you can roll back if necessary.

I'll go ahead and give it a try tomorrow. My Vaio doesn't have an option to make recovery discs so I'll just do an upgrade.

BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not attempt an upgrade until you create a disk image. Get a copy of Acronis or one of the freebie partition imaging apps and do that first. Otherwise you have absolutely no fallback position if something goes wrong.

Can windows do this as well? I have all my stuff backed up on my external already so its not really a big deal.

The point is to have a backup of the OS, not just "your stuff". Otherwise if the upgrade goes haywire, you have no way to quickly get a running OS back so you can use "your stuff".

Vista can, but I am not 100% certain the backup can be quickly used after booting from a CD. (Win7 I know DOES have that sort of functionality.) I always use Ghost 2003 or Acronis to do this sort of thing, so I have no clue about Vista's capability. (I think you have to have the Vista Install disk to do the restore, if I remember correctly. Win7 lets you create a separate bootable CD for the restore process just like Ghost or Acronis.)

If you can afford to be without your stuff for a while and are comfortable with the fact that you might have to install the OS from scratch if the upgrade fails, you can skip this. (But be prepared with a copy of all the drivers you'll need BEFORE you start!) Since I make my living using my machine, I can't afford that much down time if I had to start all over. So I make the image and if something goes wrong I can be back up in 45 minutes tops.

I got ya. I'm gonna download the trial for Acronis and backup Vista. The only issue as far as I can see when upgrading to Windows 7 is my graphics card, everything else passed just fine, but we shall see. Thanks for the help!
