Sony seems to be known to have some interesting screen technologies, so I was wondering, does Sony use anything other then TN panels on their notebooks? Is there any models with S-PVA or S-MVA LCD panels? S-IPS panels seem like they are on the way out so I doubt Sony would be offering them, Lenovo seems like they had the last one.

I know one Sony model does have LED backlights but that mostly helps with light bleed. Most other manufacturers should be offering them soon but it does seem like Sony and Apple are pretty fast when it comes to adopting LEDs for backlights.

I probably wont be buying a new notebook anytime soon but I was just curious at what Sony offers are their high prices.

I can't say anything about Laptop panels of Sony. But some users reports that the panels of new Sz series are not made by sony at all. It comes from the same taiwanese manufacturers that other guys are sourcing their panels. So I won't be surprised if it is the same technology that all run of the mill panels are.

LED backlight are given atleast on two sony models TZ and SZ. It does not help at all in ligth bleeding. Look at the posts talking about the black light bleeding problem of SZ series. Not only sony and Apple, Dell recently offers LED panels for their XPS M1330.

So if you think Sony is a magic manufacturer of panels, you are wrong. In fact users report suggests that atleast for the laptop panels Dell is better.
