My Sony Laptop (VGN-NR498E) is roughly two years old. Tonight I turned it on and it started making a faint odd sound. The VAIO screen seemed to be stuck and then it went to a black screen and said 'Operating System Not Found.' I tried restarting and nothing happened.
Does anyone know what happened? Is there a way I can retrieve anything off of the laptop? I am so lost right no.

Two likely options:
1: You have inadvertently left a CD or DVD in the drive, and the BIOS is set to boot from CD/DVD. If so, just reboot without the CD/DVD.
2: Your hard drive has died. In which case you buy a new hard drive, and either (a) restore from the backups you've made, or (b) have learned why backups are necessary. -
This happened to me once on my Vaio FZ4000. I ended up creating a boot CD that included a utility to repair the hard drive. It was something from Microsoft for Windows Vista. After it ran, the computer booted up again as normal. You should Google that error and I'm sure you'll find information on the boot disc solution.

I googled it for you. Here is the solution I used:
Can I Remedy An Operating System Not Found Error?
Since I didn't have the Windows CD with me, I downloaded one and created the Boot CD. All worked out well. I should mention that my computer at this time was actually the VGN-A270 and it was running Windows XP. -
I suspect the same on the hard drive as arth1 commented above. Try google and type in Vista Recovery Disk - will get you to some websites that will allow you to download and burn an ISO of some windows tools - one being repairing the boot portion of your computer.
If that fails - then your hard drive is probably gone bad - hopefully - you have back-ups of your data.
