This and the rumors of a "MacBook Nano". It looks like Sony & Apple are planning to join the NetBook party next year.

Why is it so wide? It looks weird.

Good question, if the screen will be that large, then it will not be widescreen format. I did a quick test in photoshop, width was 530 and height is 232 or so. This is far from accurate but close to the ratio I guess. My guess a CES intro

I was thinking about getting a Netbook, but I was waiting for what Apple & Sony had up their sleeves. It looks like CES & MacWorld 2009 will tell me next month.

"It's definitely a netbook, just without a touchpad/replaced with a optical mouse pointer (like Everun Note). the screengrabs of the specs taken from Sony's internal forums (have to be an employee to log in) are floating around".

My guess is that most all manufactures will get in on this netbook thing.

Both Sony & Apple said that they wouldn't release a netbook. Maybe they meant they wouldn't release a netbook until CES/MacWorld 2009. ;)

No, it just meant they won't call it their 8.9" "laptop" a netbook and they won't sell it below $1000... :D

It's too narrow and way too wide.

As the typu U finished selling at SonyStyle Japan, I believe it'll be it's new version...and I wouldn't be surprised if they'll try to compete with the World smallest computer running Win Vista with Atom processor - Sharp Willcom D4...

Maybe it won't be a netbook at all but instead a UMPC, a replacement to their UX series.

Man I hope it is a netbook. I will get it if

    a) it has decent screen res (verticle res of 768 at least)

    and

    b) decent battery life - at least 6 hours, hopefully 8.

Honestly, I highly doubt it will have either of those things. But it's nice to dream.

    ...

Are you sure the Type U has stopped selling at Sonystyle Japan? I saw it on their site last week as I've been checking regularly for its replacement

I have seen reports of a new U in the design lab and also rumours of a netbook.

The problem with this device is it may cannabalise T series sales. However, other netbooks may already be doing a good job of that

Check it by yourself :) It says "VAIOストアでのお取り扱いは終了しました", it means that it finished selling through SonyStyle store...
