When will Sony release a new line of notebooks instead of just a refresh? Will all of them be replaced at the same time?

Why would you want a new line of notebooks? They got many problems they have to fix with their current "new" lineups, like the Z. A new lineups will have whole new problems of their own.

Sony is not doing very good financially right now, so if I were them, I wouldn't want to introduce a new laptop at the moment. They need to work on streamlining their process right now with their current line of notebooks so they can slash down the prices even more, whether its through cutting down numbers of people involved in making a single laptop, or changing materials or process steps. A new laptop would require new set of investment which they can't afford.

In fact, I think they have way too many laptop models, with convoluted naming schemes (different number for different configuration). They need to pick certain key money making markets they want to target, and discontinue others, and advertise the $hit out of the ones they keep. That's what Apple does best, and they seem to be one of the few companies in this economic environment to be breaking financial records. The fact that they have made iPods/related a status symbol through massive advertising and brainwashing, and that they switched to intel chips and established the same manufacturing process for all their laptops has also helped them tremendously.

For Sony, PS3 was a huge bust (Xbox360 had a year lead on them), they're still struggling with PSP, their music player division is all but unheard of after Sony cassette and CD walkmans, their television is outsold by other companies with lower pricing and similar quality like Samsung, etc. They need to focus on their key products and markets and realize that they cannot survive as an electronic conglomerate anymore, especially if they continue producing sub-par products while charging arm and a leg for them.

Anyways, sorry for going off in tangent!

I doubt Sony would fix problem, if there is any, with their line of notebooks. Judging from its history, there are few differences between the refresh. The recent refresh of FW and AW offer nothing new but slight change in CPU and hard drive. So whatever problem that exist would remain until they release a new line of notebooks.

New Sony notebooks are coming in the fall with the release of Nehalem processors on the Calpella platform. Quad core notebooks in Sept/Oct, and dual cores in Jan/Feb.

Agreed, I read somewhere that the trend is for the notebook or laptops to replace the desktop, or at least some desktops in my opinion. It will never catchup with the high performance gaming machines.
