Try updating your graphics drivers and your *DirectX*.

    Thanks for your reply.

    i have done both.

i need to find a way of getting the game to run in the VGA standard and not the intel GMA 500 standard.

this is the solution for an ATI graphics card which was shown on the link i referenced.

    Start reference

Yesterday, I had this problem... But found the solution !!
Graphics card ATI radeon was the problem, this card is too powerful ! It does'nt load low screen resolutions. So should enter into the config panel :
    click "peripherics"
    click "graphic card"
    doble click "ATI radeon ..."
    click "driver updating"
and choose "VGA standard and not ATI Radeon..."
    and finally reboot !

VGA will run the 256 colors palette with 640x480 screen resolution (it's necessary to modify)... and Starcraft will run !!!!!"

    End reference

i need to do this but for my intel GMA 500. also i run Vista.

Unfornately Starcraft's resolutions are hard coded into the game and cannot be forced to run any other way, via altering the shortcut or not.. I just bought a P so this is interesting. Can you manually set the display to 640x480? And if so, does it scale? Or does the desktop appear as the tinny little box in the middle of the screen? Because the intel driver utility should show you modes that the Windows display configuration won't. Also... gaming on the Vaio P.. that's brave..lol

thanks for the info. Yes im an a brave soul ! my desktop just broke so this is now my main machine ! i can and have set the display to 640x480 with it displaying on the whole screen, not in a box (i installed the drivers from the intel website - sony drivers were old and slower) but i could not set the colour palette to 256 colours which is what the error message says when you try and play SC.

    any thoughts ?

Sorry, I've got no idea past this... I know what you're talking about though, I only have the two options.. One for 16bit, and one for 32bit color.
