I've included multiple notices in my repair box not to reformat without calling me first. Will Sony listen? The terms on the back of the inventory sheet say that they will reformat the disk, however the terms on the front say that they may, in some circumstances reformat the disk.

Has anyone sent their computer in? Did they reformat it?

    Thanks,
    Peter

    They might :(

I hope you backed up all of your important documents first. Even though they said they won't, you really don't have any promises. Obviously, you can raise a stink if the do decided to reformat, but that won't get your data back.

I've made multiple backups. But I don't want to have to use them.

Why is it being sent back for repair? If it has anything to do with the hard drive, kiss your data goodbye. Unless it is something cosmetic, and they are going to need to do some system testing, chances are the first step will be to return it to the out of box state. Unless they do that, there would be no other way for them to perform any system level test and be absolutely certain of the tests feedback.

It's the DVD burner. It just died.

I included a message about how I tried many things:

Trying third party software, trying plain Windows, rolling back the driver, reinstalling the driver, resetting the BIOS, performing a system restore, trying in safe mode, etc.

I think they'll get the point that the drive is at fault.

I sent my FZ for a repair with the cpu buzzing sound. They re-imaged my hard drive. Everything will be erased.

Had you tried the registry repair trick? The one about "Upper Filters" and "Lower filters". Apparently some third party software is adding these and it causes Vista to loose track of the DVD drive completely.

No surprise there. They pretty much have to do this in order to assure that their testing routines are not affected by something you have loaded on the machine. I think this is pretty much the standard throughout the industry.

Don't expect them to come up with an acceptable solution for that buzzing.

I recently sent in my FZ180E for a CD/DVD issue. They resolved the problem and the HDD was not touched. Although I did expect them to reimage it to trouble the problem.
