Now I can not use the VAIO update utility.

"Your model information could not be found"

Great. Anyone know a utility I can use to find the chipset the motherboard is using?

CPU-Z may do that, I am not sure. Try it.

I can't verify this, but in your c:/windows directory create a "model.txt" file and in it have a line that says model = "vgn-szXXX" with the XXX being the model of the machine you have. located on the screen bezel.

I'm away from my VAIO right now to confirm this, but I know that has helped people in the past.

The chipset is 945PM for SZ1-SZ5 (European) models and 965PM for SZ5 (Asian) and SZ6 models.

Sony forgot to DMI your mainboard, will require another service to do this. The DMI info is written into the BIOS to identify the motherboard as belonging to a certain brand and model of system.
