Hy I'm interested in buying the s470 ps, because I heard it has a 64 mb dedicated video card.... Is it truth? Is it a good computer? better than the S460/b?

The Sony S is actually my favorite from their entire lineup, there's nothing this small that can also game a little bit. As for these two models, the S470 has a nVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 with TurboCache. It has 64MB on-board RAM and another 64MB that can be allocated from system RAM. The S460 has the same card.

The Sony site supports my findings. Their specs listings are the same that I posted. What do you mean by memory size?

Be careful guys....I'm pretty sure that Sony is only carrying one card for the S series and that is the GO 6200 TC with 32MB on board and up to 128MB total with shared system memory. There is a 64MB version of the Go 6200TC card out there but it is actually slower than the 32MB version because the memory is operating at a lower frequency than the 32MB card. Just wanted you guys to know.

    The S460 has a 32m card.

As for the S470 i am not sure but my guess is that it's a print error. If indeed there is a 64m card in the 470 like the Sony site states then i would love to see what it does overclocked.

So what would you advise me to do? Buy the S460 or S 470?
The price difference is almost 300 with rebate, and since I'm a game lover (soccer winning eleven/GTA san andreas/ Half Life 2) I'd like to get the best from the machine!!! Does this games run?

pygo - that's interesting because if you look at their site right now, they both list the same card.

This is what i found when looking up the specs for the two pcs on the Sony site:

    S460
    • Graphics
    nVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6200 with TurboCache™ supporting 128MB
(NVIDIA® TurboCache™ technology combines the size and bandwidth of video memory and dynamically available system memory for optimal system performance.)

    S470
    • Graphics
nVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 6200 with TurboCache™, supporting 128MB (combines the size and bandwidth of video memory and dynamically available system memory for optimal system performance).
    • Video RAM
    64MB

I mean nothing is for certain relating to the S470. People on the net have called Sony and have gotten both answers. Not surprised here. My understanding was that the difference between the two was simply the colour of the exterior. What i believe Sony means from what i pasted above is that the 64MB Video RAM is for the Intel™ Graphics Media Accelerator 900, 128MB Dynamically Shared Video Memory, and it is a type mistake of some kind. It is a little odd that before when the user entered the specifications it would state 32MB dedicated and 96 shared, it seems that both the Japan and US site no longer states this.

The reason that i lean towards this is because i have been following this particular notebook since it's initial release in the form of the Japanese High Spec 380 it has been reviewed numerous times on various Asian sites as a 32MB card with 128 Supported if the user has enough RAM. On top of this it would only seem likely that Sony would share parts between the lineups and the VAIO type FVGN-FS70B also uses the 32MB 6200 go.

I firmly believe that the card that comes with the machine is indeed a 32MB one, why would Sony switch the video card without mention to the consumers, since this is arguably an upgrade on the inital card, but it's a possibility.

Nothing is for certain unless you can pop the hood on an S470. Problem is i haven't encountered one S470 owner on any forum yet.

Until then my money is on 32MB for both machines.

That's really strange, I certainly take your word for it though, you've paid more attention than I to this model.

Sorry to burst the bubble, but i have talked to may sony reps, and they tell me it is a mistake, s470 is the s460 painted silver, the gpu is an error, (I was about to buy one and they finally gave up the info when i told them i would have to return the unit if i found out they were wrong.) And they probably have not fixed it on there page, but if you check the specs for the s460 it say 1 512MB stick of DD2 400 and thats wrong (it says two 256mb sticks in the pdf). I told them about this (as did others i have meet in some other laptop related forums) and they have not fixed that either, sony is just being dumb.

The specs on the Sonystyle.ca website for the s460 say (256 mb x2) whereas the s470 (the silver version with XP Pro) say 512 mb x 1.

Are you saying the 470 is wrong as well? This is a crucial detail for me...
Can anyone in possession of an s470 confirm?

    Thanks,
    -M.

Just got my 470 PS today. There is one stick of 512, the reason I switched the 460 I had on order to a 470. Also I think silver suits the vaio much better than the black. Still major heat problems but you can work around it for the preformance you get out of it. Battery life for normal use is exactly 3 hours on first test.

Where in the world are you guys finding the "S470", the silver casing. I don't see it at all at the sony site, the only silver casing is the s430. Can some direct me to the link, Thanks.
