The standard webcam in the 2010 model Sony S series is very poor (0.3MP video) and I wonder whether it's feasible to upgrade it with one of the 2.0MP cameras that are fitted to newish machines like the Dell Studio 1535.

My model is UK no VPCS11V9E. I note that the available space behind the screen bezel is about 3cm but I've no idea of the technical specs of different webcam connections and would be grateful for any advice.

No, it is not. You picked up the wrong model for a job as a web-cam model.
S is a business series notebook, usually businessmen don't care or even prefer their wrinkles not being visible to the other party :D

You can buy an external webcam for under 15 bucks....

But again - this is NOT a multimedia model, so before you ask if the speakers are upgradeable too - no, they are not.

    Thanks for the reply.

I understand that the S is a business orientated model (thank you for pointing it out to a noob) but there are many of us "businessmen",you know, who require quality video conferencing. Sony were very coy, with reason apparently, in the published specs about the camera when I bought this model.

The installed webcam itself looks to me like a USB plug and play type although it is very small in comparison to other models available and it would look more professional than an external webcam if it could be upgraded (it's a pretty minor niggle I know). I'm technically proficient enough to do an install myself if anyone has any idea about compatible models.

No I'm not interested in upgrading the speakers.

I would search for the parts in the sony store, and so forth, check the webcam specs and the connections needed, compare the motherboard where the new is from with your S model.

I really wonder what kind of business you are into  Are you selling products over webchats!? :D
The camera offers basic video functionality as it should, just like all other business line notebooks, such as Lenovo T series for example.

Better quality cameras are only built into multimedia/teenager notebooks.

But back to your question - I wouldn't risk breaking something and voiding the warranty for 20 bucks or even less!

    Amazon.com: Logitech Webcam C210: Electronics

or a HD camera for your "business conferences":

But if video-chatting with the built-in camera is of such great importance to you - have a look at the camera built in the Z model - it could be compatible but you need to check whether it is good enough for your needs, but taking the same resolution into account it most likely is the same camera.

No I'm speaking to clients in prison over a videolink.
Generally they're the sort of people up to the sort of activities you're hinting at.

The webcam in the Z is also a crappy .3 megapixel... (I don't think you can physically fit a much higher res sensor in the thin lid).

But with that said, there can always be a way to get something done. I just don't have an answer for you.

How about the camera from the new VPC-F series? Anyone know where I could shop for parts/compare the tech spec?

You could always get an additional USB webcam which clips on to your notebook.
