Well, I'm sure many of you other S13p owners have noticed the flickering/hazing/fuzziness of the right side of the screen already.
Can anyone of you tell me why it's happening though? Bad cable contact? Faulty lcd panel? Software?
I'd like to try to get some numbers on this problem, although it still won't change me from keeping this sexy beast of a laptop.![]()

Did you call Sony yet, what did they say regarding this horror of an issue?
-
I didn't call them because I wasn't planning on returning the laptop, but maybe I should give them a call to see what they'll be doing in response.
-
Is the issue that bad? Can you record a video of it and upload it to YouTube? Does anyone else have this issue or just a bad batch?
-
It's just a bit of pixel walk - fairly typical of matte monitors
Doesn't matter in the slightest to me -
-
If it were actual flickering it wouldn't only happen when you slightly move your gaze -
-
Perhaps I'm biased though having used a matte desktop monitor with minor pixel walk for 5+ years
I haven't seen a single matte or semi-matte screen laptop in 10+ years so I have nothing else to compare it with -
My wife's SVS13A190X Premium in gold with the 1600 by 900 screen does NOT flicker or have pixel walking or whatever it's being called. It does however display a little bit of grainy characteristics when viewing whites or other light colors while web browsing. Is it a result of the matte film ? Is it a result of a lesser quality panel ? I don't know. This flickering problem might be a minor issue compared to the grainy screen problem. My Z has a matte screen and my AW190 has a semi-matte screen and doesn't display the flaws the S13 appears to have. Her S13 Premium is a $1400.00 laptop. She feels it is acceptable, but she is well aware of the screen issue. Her SR590 screen looks so much better. She wants to keep it though. If it was mine, it would have went back. I wish the new Z still had the option of 1600 by 900 because a gold Z would have been bought instead of that S13 Premium. Sorry for the long post.

Please. someone can upload a video or picture of this defect?
thanks -
It took me 2 weeks to even notice the defect. Then I forgot about it. Now I opened this thread and remembered it.
It is so slight that if nobody mentions it to you there is a 99.99% chance you won't notice. You have to constantly move your eye in the very right top corner of the display, making sure your eye doesn't focus, to even notice the 1.2x0.5cm area that is affected by the pixel walk.
Looking at my laptop from 1.5 feet away I can't even notice the issue. When I get within 4 inches of the screen then I can very slightly notice it.
If you are returning your laptop because of this issue, please do not purchase another laptop. This defect is so small the new laptop you get is bound to have a larger defect, so you will probably just return that one too. -
Yea, I'll admit that I cannot notice anything when images are moving at more than 1fps. And yea, i've noticed that the screen is a bit grainy but I see it a lot on other matte screens.
Hate how my screen collects so much dust though. -
I just bought a S13P and I definitely have the flicker problem. It didn't show up for the first two days but now its pretty prominent. Those saying that its not a big deal I'm guessing don't have that much of a flicker. But on this machine the entire right side flickers. I don't have to to slightly move my gaze or anything. It happens all the time and I find it hard to even read articles since I always see flickering on the right side. I would return for a refund, but since I bought on newegg it seems I can only return for a replacement.

I have seen the one with very noticeable flickering, when I looked at the demo model at the Sony Store.
Fortunately mine doesn't turn out like that.
Mine probably the same as ComradeNF, only noticed it if I really focus on it at the very small spot on the top right. -
I changed that back to 60hz and no more screen flickering. So I don't have the screen flickering problem at all. I'm relieved; I didn't want to have to send this laptop back. -
Ooo that's good news then. Maybe the 40hz is the one causing th flickering after all. Can someone verify
-
-
Pixel walk, no -
I mean the workaround mentioned above.
-
Yeah can someone confirm
-
Confirm what?
40hz makes it truly flicker, 60hz doesn't.
Neither refresh rate has any effect on the pixel walk defect -
-
what is the pixel walk effect?
-
To clear up exactly what I'm talking about with regard to pixel walk, I've taken a video: (watch at 480p for maximum effectiveness)
Note the broken/wavy effect of the horizontal lines. This is not the camera. Only happens at the far top right of the screen while you are moving your vision and in no way affects any kind of operation.
This is the only flickering-related defect my screen has. No true flickering.Last edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
In this test :
Inversion (pixel-walk) - Lagom LCD test
Mine got a small flickering on 7a, but very noticeable on 7b.
I guess most LCD have this issue(may fail from 1 to 4 test), just that the result may vary, for example some may face flickering on 4a and 4b but not others, and some may face flickering on more than two test.
There are those that don't fail at all. -
Ah... Perfectly satisfied with the screen now that it's permanently set to 60hz...
-
Awesome poki, so all along the issue u were having was the 40hz glitch?
-
Well, I do have pixel walk. But it's far less noticeable after 60hz and virtually unnoticeable while gaming. Perfect!
-
Where is the option to set this to 60hz or to make sure it is running 60hz using windows 8? Is it under Sony Vaio Control Center or the intel hd graphics settings?
-
It is under either the Sony VAIO CC or under power settings in Windows 7, which should be where it probably is for W8 too?
