It is hard to describe this. It doesn't happen all the time, only when the screen changes quickly like scrolling in a RTS game - i will notice the area being refreshed there are diagonal lines which quickly disappear. Is this a refresh rate issue or is this what they call "screen dithering"? I wonder if this is the same on every SR out there, or is mine defective? Although the diagonal lines are not very obvious they are noticeable nevertheless.

can anyone comment? nobody else noticed the lines?
i assume is the same problem as this post:

best thing to do is call sony...
cause i bet no one can solve this problem, and if someone had, they would have replied it in that post -
This might be a refresh rate issue, it might be silly but try updating the video drivers... i uses the modded catalyst 8.8 driver and dont notice any lines while playing spore, no one lives forever 2, quake 4, or call of duty 4... those are hte only games i can comment on but i dont see any lines...

mine is intel x4500mhd - any idea how i can update the video driver? i tried downloading from intel website but when i ran the exe it says that it is not validated for this machine and asks that i get from laptop manufacturer (sony).

I had the same problem... I sucessfully updated the Intel driver but the problem was still there. I corrected the problem by returning the laptop and getting a refund lol
-
i am past the return period so that won't help
i am wondering if it could be a memory issue? since the igp is using shared memory.
how did you update the driver? thanks! -

Nobody else have this problem?
-
the problem i guess is that this problem is not easy to spot. at least for my case, it is difficult to spot. it happens only for the images in the background and the lines will disappear almost immediately.
-
I think i know what you're talking about
when i sign in to windows i can see (barely) some lines on the screen when it fades in and fades out.. but like i said, its barely noticeable tho.. -
erm, i don't see it when i login windows... i don't see it during normal usage. i see it when i play games that have scrolling background - the lines will show up momentarily in the background while none of the foreground images get any. i will also see the lines during movie playback, but not always, only on some moving images. image slideshow no lines.
i have already updated the video driver but it still shows (but the updated driver solved my previous problem of photo slideshow jerking). -
This is a known issue with these notebooks and the Sony Z500 series (all of them). The Z590, Z540, you name it all have these weird diagonal refresh lines that show up for moving images or when you move your eyes. I have read around that it is due to crappy LED-lit LCDs Sony is using...or poor polarizing filters or something. I went to Best Buy, the Sony Style store, and ordered one online and they all had this problem. The guys in the stores never noticed it (or don't want to admit it). Of course, after I showed this to the tech in the store his response was, ", now I am never going to be able to not see those lines..." Everyone I have shown it to can see it.
I sent mine in for repair to the Sony Service center in San Diego and they called me to ask what the problem was because the LCD was testing normal. Of course, if you head to the Apple Store and look at any Macbook with a comparable LED-lit screen (premium screens especially like the Air or Pro) it has nothing like this even though it costs the same amount or less. It is a pity, because these Sonys have all kinds of edge over the macs.
I also looked at Z600 series computers in these stores and all of them do this except for the Z690. I spoke to the sales person that helped me with this computer (on the phone) and she said that the Z690 has an upgraded display, but she was really coy about acknowledging any problems with the z500 series (even though the Vaio outlet is full of these things).
In addition to all of this, the sales people at Sony are good and bad, sometimes being informative and helpful and other times horrible. The service people are generally nice and efficient, but the outsourced call center is foreign and annoying.
In the end, I ended up returning the Z590 I purchased. Except for this horrible issue, it was a wonderful machine in every single way. Shame on Sony for ignoring this ugly problem. A screen shouldn't just look nice when it sits still. Isn't this the company that claims to be superior in video quality?!
*sigh*

My recently purchased SR390P also has this problem. Its really distracting too, especially when watching movies. I tried upgraded drivers from intel's website and it didnt help.
