I am posting this thread for a friend's friend who owns a Sony SR140 notebook. She dropped it that made the power button broken, maybe dislodged? It seems jammed and cannot power the notebook. She has it warranted at Fry's but they claim it will take 2 weeks to replace the piece. Have any ideas if this can be self-fixed?
Any help/info is much appreciated. Thank you.

...take the two weeks, fixing it yourself will most likely (90%) void the warranty, and you'll probably screw up. But if you want to risk it... eh. Good luck. Might be dislodged.. but I don't think fry's would say a two week repair time for a dislodged button. My entire Hard Disk failed and they fixed it within a day... so if it takes a major chain like fry's to acquire the necessary parts... personally wouldn't risk it but good luck if you choose too.

my power button has also become dislodged/smashed in. it seems that there is a design flaw or weakness that contributes to this. I have not been abusive to my lappy as I always put it in a case and never drop it or anything. However, by gently pulling out on the cylinder, it works just fine. It does get jammed occasionaly. hopefully if mine ever fully breaks, sony won't say it's my fault since I didn't get the accidental damage protection.

Could it be that you're putting your laptop in a bag and it happens when you set it down on the ground? I'm kind of worried if the power cylinder is really that fragile. Can you take pictures of what happened?
