Hi, I have a Sony SZ583 (equivalent to SZ650N/C) with a 160GB hybrid HDD. I can't believe how much of a gimmick hybrid hdds were - they don't feel any faster...

But I'm looking to upgrade to an SSD. I saw a few posts for older SZs like the SZ1 and SZ2 but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with a newer SZ?

I'm also looking for recommendations on the kind of SSD. I hear some last longer than others? like enterprise vs. mainstream vs. value line? Also, is there a max height e.g. 9.5mm vs. 12.5mm 2.5" drives? Thanks all!

I upgraded my SZ to Corsair SSD what must be about 2 years ago now. It's bascially a 2nd gen Samsung drive without TRIM support. You can get 2nd gen Samsung drives with TRIM support now. It doesn't have the fastest 4K results but power consumption is very low and it out performs many SSD's in single tasks.

The SZ does not support ACHI so you would need to hack that to use the latest RAID/Matrix drivers. With the native drivers my speeds are still where they should be.

A Intel G2 is very good drive, it has much better 4k speeds than the PM800.

A Toshiba/Kingston V+ would also be a very good choice, power consumption is lower than the G2 and performance is not far off either.

The latest hybrid Seagate's Momentus XT drives are meant to be pretty good, things have moved on a bit but SSD's are still of course better.

Btw, it takes a 9.5mm drive.

There has been some debate as to SLC drives lasting longer than MLC drives, but you should be fine with either. The falure rate for MLC drives is still very low.
