    Hi to all,
I'd like to replace T7500(merom) with T8300(penryn) in my SZ650 to get it run a bit cooler and longer on battery.
Then,I presume I need to upgrade Bios,at least.
The question is what site I'm to visit to download the proper one;guess it should be similar to that in SZ760/SZ770/SZ780.
    Any help?

There was another thread where a user discussed his upgrade to Penryn and it did not require a new BIOS.

    I have an SZ483N/C with Core 2 Duo T7400

What CPU can I upgrade to? Santa Rosa or Penryn?

You can only upgrade it to a T7600 because your processor is not on the Santa Rosa platform.

Wait, are you sure the user upgraded from a Merom to Penryn Chip? Because I thought that Penryn would only run with the Santa Rosa Chipset... I'm confused. I also run a Merom processor (T7200) and I'd love to get a bit more juice out of it with Penryn, but I didn't think it was possible. If anyone could confirm that'd be awesome.

You guys need to understand the difference between a chip and a platform. Penryn is a Chip, Santa Rosa is a platform.

To answer your question. You have a T7200 chip which is merom and runs on the Napa platform. Penryn won't work for you because it runs on the Santa rosa platform. You will need to buy a new computer that runs the santa rosa platform.

Yeahhh that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure. I kinda got my hopes up but thanks for bringing me back to reality. I think I can have my good ol SZ for another year or so before it's necessary to upgrade. Thanks for the info.

I'm a bit confused now. So what is the fastest CPU that can be installed in a Sony SZ that presently is running a T7200 ? Is it the T7600 ?And is it worth it, also in view of the 533MHz memory bus ?

    ^ ^ ^

You wont see any big change in the performance with T7600, so better stick to T7200 for now

I wouldn't bother too much with changing the CPU unless you run lots of CPU intensive stuff.

What about upgrading a SZ Penryn CPU to a Montevina CPU I was wondering if this can it be done?

As far as I know the Montevina platform uses second generation Penryn CPUs.

I think it is possible to use a, let's say P9500 in SZ, but it would then run at 800Mhz FSB so it would loose performance.

A possible benefit may be lower heat and a bit better battery life but how much this is remains to be seen.

So yes it may be possible but I don't think it is worthwhile.

Thanks Phil, i guess that the processors in the new Sony laptops are running at 800mhz anyway seeing as the ram limits it to 800mhz or is that no so?

The memory runs at 800mhz, but the CPU has a FSB of 1066.

Santarosa memory runs at 667mhz and CPU has a FSB of 800 I believe.

Overview of all these details is here:
