I've done a clean install of XP on my Sony SZ340.
I've installed the HDD protection utility from the website and it said it was successful.

However, when I shake the machine I get no 'bubble' on the taskbar telling me that it is active.

How do I know for sure if its working or not?

If you don't see it it's probably not functioning correctly. Have you installed all the Sony shared libs/utilities yet? The HDD protection also requires the drivers.

i have all the sony utilities. my brightness works + wireless switch etc.

right now the only things i cant get to work (under XP) are that HDD utility and my wacom tablet (although bizarrely the wacom works under vista with the xp driver)

where exactly would i see it? i dont want to keep shaking the machine to trigger the protection -- especially if its not on!

anybody know any process names / services / hardware device names that will be active when this is installed?

Have you tried to run the program manually? It's in "c:\program files\Sony\HDD protection (or something)\something.exe"

check your event logs, maybe it is recorded in there and perhaps will tell you what is missing if it isn't started.

Go to programs, click on Sony Vaio HDD protection folder.
Click on VCC storage Protection icon, it should bring up the control panel with the axis and setting.
Make shure all of the itms are checked. While it is up tap around the mouse , drive area and see if it registers on the meter.

You should install HDD protection driver in additon to protection software.
