I'm in the market for a new laptop to replace my aging desktop. I've been looking at the new Sony SZ series and found a great deal on one with a gig of ram, 80 gb hard drive and the works, minus the CD-RW drive. I was wondering if I could purchase that laptop and swap out the optical drive with a dual layer DVD burner in the future without too much trouble or warranty voiding?

    Thanks in advance.

You CANT. Besides you will definately void warranty.
Sony SZ DVD/CD Drives are inbuilt and therefore not swappable.

It depends on the manufacturer whether it voids the warranty. I replaced on combo drive on a Compaq. HP said it would not void the warranty. They would not obviously cover the drive under warranty. Making it fit can be an issue. The bezels are probably not the same and swapping them can be tricky as sometimes the connectors do not line up. Perhaps Ultradrives.com can lend some assistance in determinng what will fit. Good Luck.
