I had a new Samsung SATA SSD coming in a few weeks, I have a Sony SZ670N lappy running Windows 7. Can i just copy my old HDD to the new SSD and TRIM will automatically be enable + other Win7 SSD benefits?

    OR

Would it be best to reinstall everything from scratch which im trying to avoid?

    thanks!

You can just copy it. You'll have to reboot twice before the new drivers are active, and you may have to manually change a couple of settings afterward, like turning off scheduled defragmentation. Otherwise you should be good.

I would highly suggest you do a fresh install of windows on the SSD. Thats the best way to go.. :)

Why do you highly suggest that?
All he needs to do is turn off defrag as the poster above stated.

It somewhat depends on the age of the install.
If it was me, and the install more than a couple months old, I woudl go ahead and reinstall. It's a good chance to clean out the junk.

actually i have a clean install backup using acronis trueimage when i freshly installed Win7 a few months ago.

I can restore that backup then restart a couple of times for win7 to detect the SDD then i should be ready to go with TRIM enabled right?

A quick search reveals Win7's TRIM is always active and sending the signal.
However non TRIM capable S.S.D.s just ignore the signal.

To see if TRIM is enabled, open a command prompt as adminstrator (right click, "run as") and type "fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify" (without the quotes). If it returns a "0" then it is enabled.

Use your old image, disable defrag and you should be good. Remember not every drive supports TRIM, and TRIM doesn't work in any raid apparently.

i installed win7 on September before your article came out, the only thing that wasn't working was S1 and S2. Didn't mind to fix it anymore hehehe..

It depended on the RC version. By the time I wrote the first guide in Oct. I had already fiddled with all of them. One had severe Bluetooth issues, another like you said had S1/S2 issues, another had brightness issues. On however, worked brilliantly, older 32 and 64bit drivers still worked, almost everything worked perfect, but the OS was unstable. The next released brought back stability, but also driver issues.

Basically, it just depended on the version.

That fsutil command seems pretty unreliable as I also get the "0" response on my HDD equipped laptop......

No, just confirms that TRIM is always active regardless of an SSD being installed or not. Precisely as expected.

    Not unreliable, just pointless.
