It is the battery itself almost certainly.

When it had a charge and was plugged in, the meter said it was charging, but the percent was ticking down. Now, it's reached zero and won't go up. I have two laptops that will take the battery, but it refuses to charge in either one.

I've never heard of a battery just up and dying like this. Yesterday it could hold a 3 hour charge. Any idea what's up. It's the stock battery from an SZ440.

EDIT: Now it just ticked from 0% to 100%. I was reasonably sure it was holding a charge, as my computer would shutdown properly when I unplugged it from the wall. So, I guess there is an internal problem with the battery that makes it think it isn't charged? Maybe?

Batteries can pack up in different ways. Sometimes you might get good warning but sometimes you might not.
I think your battery is most likely dead because well as you've said you tried it in two laptops and have the same problem.
