My SZ is in it's eleventh month of life and last night the fan sounded like the bearing was about to go. It stopped after a while, but in my experience, a fan will soon die after starting to make weird noises.

I'm assuming that the standard warranty will cover this since I have no extended warranty. While I really dread the thought of having to send my laptop through the mail and to Sony's (horrible) tech support, I guess I am left with no choice. I did replace the stock ram with two 1GB sticks. Is it ok for me to leave these in there? I don't really have access to the stock ram.

I would take 1 of the sticks out before shipping.

You could try to use some compressed air to save the fan.
