    Hi!

I'd like to know what form factor is the SZ hard disk. Is it 1.8" or 2.5"?
Planning on purchasing the computer and I want to change the hard disk to a SSD.

If you don't know the form factor then can you send me the brand and model of the disk.

    Thanks

2.5" SATA - not PATA. Big difference in the connection. I'm installing a 7200rpm Momentus 7200.1 right now (ST910021AS).

I can tell you it will be minimal to no change. The modern 7200s are nearly as efficient power-wise as the 5400s, and I also did it in the fall to another laptop and noticed no change.

    Fender,
Can you post what the exact model numbers are of the drive you removed from your SZ and the new one you dropped in? I'm sure there's effectively zero difference in power, but I'm curious if there's a difference in startup current between the two.

Fender, can you comment on the noise of the drive, especially when in idle compared to the old 5400 drive?
But I agree, the harddrive is the bottleneck on most modern notebooks, 5400rpm's is just too slow to keep up with the rest of the high-end system sometimes..

Well, the Seagate 7200.1 100GB is now in two of my notebooks - the PATA in the Sharp and SATA in the Sony, and in both I have heard no difference in HD noise vs. the stock drives that the systems were supplied with. They're pretty quiet.

As for performance - let's put it this way, when 5400s came out, I immediately jumped from the 4200 drives. Same with the 7200. If you do anything that accesses a lot of disk - like I do with VMWare or with music - you want a faster drive. It will also help starup time, but the reality is if you're just doing word processing and surfing the web, 5400 is most likely good enough for you.

What about the heating issue of the new hard disk? Could you provide information about it? Thanks,
