I'm still trying to figure out which SZ model has Santa Rosa
I love the Japanese model, and I'm looking to get a used one for upgrade purposes.

However, after days of searching and looking around in forum..I still cannot find out which has it, which doesn't.
I'm an owner for sz28gp, but I have max out the performance as new chips requires Santa Rosa.

Does any one have a list of SZ models that contains Santa Rosa? :)D I'm trying to throw a X9000 into it)

    Thanks guys

Any of them that come with a Socket P processor.

The SZ will most likely not support the x9000. Way too much heat for that small of a chassis, not to mention a huge drain to battery life.

I have seen one or two SZ 650 upgraded with X9000 and it seems they perform really well, so that's why I rise my question here about Santa Rosa.

how do you determine a Socket P processor?
All I know is, looking at the Intel Sticker cannot give me the answer. Is there a way to deternime it through windows?
    Thanks Lithus

    P.S: Does Sz90 has Socket P processor ?

Santa Rosa was released mid last year. SZ4 was released for Vista launch, so SZ6 (SZ5 for Australians) and SZ7 are Santa Rosa models. SZ6 having Merom CPUs while SZ7 having Penryn CPUs.

    Thanks DTX for your comment,
All I know right know is the Sz7 series comes with Santa Rosa like the sz79gn\c but I'm fancy about the Japan models of the 94/95..but those comes at a very high price.

I have come across a used sz90 (i need to double check if its 90 or above)...but after reading all the bits and pieces..it seems the model number doesn't reflect what it has...the Jap sz90 series..while others has the Sz7..

This makes me really confuse to know which is which..

Thanks guys for the help out

If an SZ has a Nvidia Geforce Go 7400 graphics card, then it is an older non-Santa Rosa model. If it has an 8400 graphics card, then it is Santa Rosa/Penryn.

The SZ90 is not a specific model, but instead a customizable non-Santa Rosa Japanese model, actually the first SZ models to come out in early 2006. Most Vaios can be custom ordered in Japan, where you can pick the processor, ram, hard drive, etc.

Its been replaced now there by the Penryn SZ95.

The current Japanese SZ95 is custom ordered from Japan, so they don't have one configuration, you can pick one of several processors, hard drives, ram, etc.

They also have the SZ75, which is a pre-made model which has a Penryn Core 2 Duo 2.5 ghz T9300 processor.

If you are outside Japan, one place to get these Vaios is Conics.net.

Their link for the built to order SZ95

Their link for the pre-configured SZ75

    Thanks rahulnirmal for great info.

So I can safe to say, if i browse through the system and locate that it has a 8400 graphics card then it has Santa Rosa..regardless to whatever model that i have? (For Sony SZ Only) ?

    Thanks again~

All models 've got Santarosa, unless it has a Pentium dual core or Celeron , it is most likely a santarosa.

And I dont think it is a good idea to put the X9000 into a tiny laptop like a SZ.

You can get a SZ with T9300, SZ79n in Japan, or T75N , which has T8100.

That is incorrect, the Vaio SZs have never the Pentium Dual Core processors, a small number have Celeron M processors.

The first SZs in early 2006 had Napa (Core Duo) processors and went to Merom (the first Core 2 Duo processors) in late 2006.

Remember that the first Core 2 Duo processors that came out August 06 (Merom), the refresh in May 07 (Santa Rosa) and refresh again in January 08 (Penryn) are all "Core 2 Duo" processors. But they have been refreshed a couple of times from Merom to Penryn to have things like faster FSB speeds and more L2 cache for instance. But the basic architecture is the same.

Napa and Merom share the same chipset and Santa Rosa and Penryn share the same chipset. So if you have a Napa notebook, you can swap the processor with a Merom and if its Santa Rosa, you can put in a Penryn processor.

As I said before, the really easy way to find out if an SZ is Napa/Merom or Santa Rosa/Penryn is to see if the graphics card is an Nvidia 7400/GMA 950 or 8400/X3100
