I'm really looking into this laptop for school next year and I wanted to get some personal feedback about the laptop and have not found anything. I think this is a relatively new variant of the SZ. This computer also has the "premium" carbon fiber and I am wondering how it compares to the standard. I still think there is confusion about premium carbon fiber in the US, since there was some released in Japan. I did read the thread about the carbon fiber, but I am still questioning what it is like in the US. Portableone.com has the SZ280P and I am wondering if it has the premium carbon like the SZ281P. If i ordered it from portableone i could upgrade to a 100 GB 7200rpm HD for the same price as ordering the 281 from the sonystyle website.

    Thanks for the comments.

The Sz281X/P has the Japanese Premium Carbon weave on it like th Japanese one. At least this is what US Sony website states, and the picture looks like the Japanese ones.

yeah the 281 is only available off sonystyle.com, and the only real differences are the fancy carbon fiber weave and the bundled carrying case. i would suggest getting the 280 because it is the same computer with all the same capabilties and the same weight. i recently got the 280 with the docking station for $3200 (the price of the 281 itself) and love it to death. if you really want the case, buy it separately (youll still save over $100)

p.s. the way i thought of it, premium carbon fiber will lure theives at a higher rate, especially at college
