    Hi all,

I've spotted the vaio SZ1HP/B on sale for £880, at the same place I can get the SZ4MN/B for £1,126 - basically a difference of £250. Firstly, am I right in thinking, aesthetically, these laptops are the same? Same design, same weight, same measurements, same backlight, etc? The difference appears to be in the processor speed, HD size, and RAM.

I am new to the notebook world - is £250 worth paying for the latest model?

As a general question, are the SZ series only available in one colour per model number? I am sure I saw a pearl white version but that may have been a different Sony model.

    Thanks a lot

i think it worth, the sz4 which the lastest model of sz series, it has improved some of the build quality of the previous version, like they fixed the space bar on the keyboard, also if you get the premium model, you are getting a led backlight new technology.

I'm confused about the LED technology stuff. I can't work out if it's present in ALL SZ4s, or only in the more expensive versions. I am limited to the lowest priced SZ4 - the SZ4MN/B - and from what I can tell, it says it has 'X Black LCD' but not '... with LED technology' that the other models in the series have.

As I cannot afford anything above the lower priced one, do you still think it's worth paying the £250 extra to get it over the earlier version?

The premium screen has been on SZs since the 1st generation - that's nothing new.

The biggest differences are hard drive size, included memory, and processor/processor speed. It's basically the same laptop.

Please do a search here in the forum - the difference in the screens has been discussed a zillion times.

Hi Fender, I've done some research and think I'm clearer than before.
I'm thinking of importing from clearance club: http://www.clearanceclub.com/catego...vailibility=ALL&condition=ALL&limit=10&page=1

Looking on their selection for SZ Vaios (link above should go direct to them), am I right in saying that they don't have any that have the premium carbon fibre casing? They have ones with black carbon casing, but I couldn't see any that have premium carbon. The difference here is cosmetic, not weight, if I'm right in saying.

I'm thinking of the VGN-SZ360P/C or VGN-SZ370P/C - I think there's some differences to the wireless between the two but am unsure.

Between the SZ3 and SZ4 series, is there any other difference aside from what's 'under the hood'? I know at some point the keyboard was fixed (something about the spacebar), was that SZ1 to SZ2 generation?

Finally, what were the differences between the SZ1 to 2 and SZ 2 to 3, aside from processor, memory etc? I'm wondering if I can't drop down to a lower series.

    Thanks again

As I said, your major changes (other than internal parts Sony wanted to change i.e. the built-in camera model) were processor, memory, and hard drive. Cosmetically you couldn't look at the 1st gen vs. the 4th and say there's a clear difference. The 1st gen is just Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo.

If you get a warranty, I don't see where getting an "older" model would be bad.

HOwever, the premium SZs are easy to spot - thin screen vs. the thicker one. The 360 is a premium, I'm not sure if it has the thatched carbon (i.e. you could see the lines) or the regular carbon. The SZx60 (insert a number for x) and above (i.e. SZx70, SZx80, SZx90) were the premium models.

Both SZ370, and 360 lids are carbon fiber, and have better screens. The only difference between them is 370 has a Cingular WWAN antenna. The premium carbon fiber models are 281,381,491(I'm not sure about about the SZ1 series) You cannot really tell the difference between regular and premium carbon fiber unless you examine the laptops lid. If you go on Sony.com theres a section where they show magnesium alloy, carbon fiber, and premium models lids.
