I have 2 questions about our new Sony SZ491N/X laptop with factory install of Vista Business.
    1. Do any of you with experience with the SZ480 line of laptops notice a difference in performance between the 4200RPM drive and the 5400RPM drive.
    2. The laptop takes about 2 min to boot to the desktop and then the hard drive churns for another 3 min.

No experience with the actual line of laptops, but I know for a fact that a 5400RPM drive is much faster than a 4200RPM drive, and well worth the upgrade. I had a 4200RPM drive, and while it worked, it took a long time to load anything. And that boot to desktop/actual boot time is just typical Windows, unfortunately. (BTW, RMP is the Royal Mounted Police, or the Mounties in Canada. RPM is Revolutions Per Minute.)

oops TYPO on the RPM. I will fix that.
I am just wondering how much of it "slow" performance when it come to startup and shutdown is related to the hard drive and how much is related to Visa. I tried to locate another SZ470 or SZ491 laptop with an XP load but no avail yet.

I have the same 491 SZ. I posted few weeks ago that I'm experiencing very slow performance. Not only that, that damn PC gets so hot, the heat actually warped the plastic top near the graphic card area.

It's supposed to be the fastest of the bunch but I ain't feeling it.

Install a 7200 rpm hdd. It will boost boot time by 30%.

It's funny that you mention that. I actually ordered a 7200RPM drive yesterday. It is "only" 100GB but I don't even need that much.
