    Hey everyone,

Basically my new Sony SZ7 always has the fan running in the background. I went into to power management and changed the settings so the fan is at level 1 and there is no audible difference from level 5 to 1. I'm using this laptop at night when I'm in my dorm and the fan noise gets pretty annoying.

Any suggestions? I also did a clean Vista 32 Ultimate install on it if that matters. I also run on stamina mode at all times. Any input would be great! Thanks.

I don't have a problem with my SZ7 and fan noise. I am pretty sensitive to noise as well.

I use my computer in stamina mode all the time mainly and my fans have hardly ever come on.

I think that my SZ7 is a quiet running laptop.

I wonder what's happening with my SZ then.. Do you think my laptop fan might be broken?

There might be a problem with your fan but just thinking on this i use balanced mode or power saver when plugged in. I have never used high performance for that long when plugged in to see if it might kick the fans of a bit more. Do you use high performance mode when plugged in maybe if you do you should drop that to balanced mode or power saver and give that a go.

I use the power saver mode and I've configured everything so that it will make the fan noise really quiet but in reality, it doesn't do anything.

Also, my fans go full speed when I boot up the laptop and it stays at those speeds throughout the day. Never slows down or speeds up.

It sounds defective then i also don't even hear my fans when i boot up.

I haven't tried to configure any settings all i did was select the power profile to use and that was it.

I'm not sure what is normal. With the 3 SZs that I have used (including the SZ370 that I sold long time ago), no matter what fan level (1-5) that I choose, the fan noise sounds exactly the same. Like helios26's SZ, all those 3 SZ's fan seem to be running full speed all the time. Maybe I'm really lucky to get all 3 defective SZs?

At my work we have all Dells. I can tell you that my Latitude D630 is quieter than the SZ when the D630's fan is off, but louder when the D630's fan is on. I think Sony struck a good balance hear, keeping components cooled with a constant, low-noise fan.

my sz (2.5 years old now) 's fan is now rattling. I opened up the back panels, and with limited access to the fan, I used an air blower to rid the dust (though i didn't see much of it). So it seems the fan's rattling because it's scraping against the fan's casing.

Anyone can recommend a solution? TIA.

I use my SZ for long times - on the Chipset either with Vaio optimized or poweesave - and I dare say, it does make a humming sound.
But its definitely not at full power.
