Today I found Best Buy offering the SZ650 for $1700. Just what I wanted in a notebook! The review here looks great, the specs look just like what I want, etc etc.

But a quick look the SZ740 on Sony's site made me think again.

Edit: after reviewing some of the SZ7 threads (oops), I'm more curious why the 740 itself is priced "low". Is it made of balsa wood or something?

The 40 is rather low on specs unless you customize it (thus driving the price up). As well it doesn't have the premium finish as you can clearly see. The 650 was my original choice until the higher end models came down in price. Go for it.

The SZ740 series will be the Magnesium casing like the previous SZ640 and SZ440 series before it, while I'm sure we'll see an SZ780 CTO/BTO option on Sonystyle here soon for a customizable carbon fiber SZ700 as well.
