why not buy one now from PortableOne? They are shipping now and for less money - plus they'll customize and offer bloatware removed option free

    Tariff.

Even thought US dollar is weak and Canadian dollar is strong, shipping it to Canada is slightly more expensive.

I don't understand why Sonystyle Canada won't adjust the price since the exchange rate is 1 US = 1 CA.

if you buy a sony usa laptop and live in canada: i was told that you need to buy the expressship warantee and have your notebook shipped to a service center in the usa for service.
even with duty and tax, many sony products come out cheaper when buying from the states, at least the times ive done it.

Yeah I was looking at just getting the 780 from portable one, but I'm not sure how the whole warranty thing will work (if I bring it across the border)...Personally, I'd look for savings of at least $300 or so to order from the States, otherwise its not really worth the hassle and such for a small amount

Anyone know anything about how the portable one warranty applies across the border?

    Thx

you have to ship it back to US for them to service is my understanding
    Sony Canada won't touch it

I too am looking to buy a SZ in Canada in the very near future ... it appears our choices are:

    780 as is (250GB HD, 5400; all black);
650 somewhat customizable (choice of HD, the 200 GB 7200 is +$130)

I think I'm leaning to the 780 because of the LED backlight screen, but it sure would be nice to be able to customize it a bit.

The 650 is also a premium model and has LED backlight screen.

as far as warrantee, that was biggest issue with my sony from the states and bringing to canada.
to my knowledge the best warrantee for this is the express ship warrantee which is 189.99 for 3 yrs, and that covers express shipping of the notebook to the appropriate sony service center, in my case that would be one in the states, since im in montreal.
thats as far as i know, and the service i purchased for my sz

well then I'm confused ... I'm sure it's elsewhere but I must have missed it ... what is/are the main new features that the 780 has over the 650?

I talked to someone from the Sony Store and he said the customizable SZ780 will be available at the end of this month; so here's hoping.

Apparently, the SZs in Sonystyle Canada are $150 more expensive than in Sonystyle USA and perhaps $130 more expensive than Portable One. Here are the tradeoffs: If I buy anything from the states, I will have to pay perhaps $50 for s&h. I will completely avoid that if I buy it from Sonystyle Canada. If the laptop is defective, Canada will definitely be more convenient and I am only walking distance away from the Sony Store. Sonystyle Canada also offers a 20% accessory coupon with a purchase of a laptop; most likely I would go for an extra AC adapter, unless the port replicator comes with it.

I also want to know all the bloatware that are unnecessary, because I will probably try to remove them myself; and btw, how much space is the recovery partition? If the hard drive is big and fast enough (ie: 200GB 7200rpm), I may not even consider removing it.

Penryn is a much faster mobile processor and more power efficient than the Merom processor; therefore, the SZ7 laptop will run slightly cooler than the SZ6.

there is a hidden 10gb partition on it.
portableone included shipping to canada for me, and service for defective wasnt so bad.
i agree buying in canada is much more convenient though.

Hmm I'm a bit confused with this "express" warranty thats $189 as someone mentioned...does this mean that you can ship it to the closest Sony store in the States for free and have it repaired and such?

Also whats the deal with the different specs from sonystyle.com and sonystyle.ca ... seems like in the US its the 160gb hybrid HD and in Canada its a 250gb HD (no hybrid)?

And finally does anyone know if people in the states have started to recieve their customized 780's? Here its expected to arrive on the 15th but I know there was delays in the states so ... Oh yeah and do you think the 15th also applies to the in-store arrival date?

    Thx

Hmm I must be misinterpreting it...$189 for 3 years of coverage + free shipping if something goes wrong?

That seems like a really good deal

I'll have to get in touch with P1 and see what exactly its about...

On another note the 780 is now avaliable to buy, no more pre-order!

the one here in Richmond BC (Vancouve) never budged when i try to negotiate

so do they have the SZ780 in display now?

for 50 bucks off and free case I do think it is a good deal in Canada

Not a surprisingly good deal but hey it's sony and we are in canada...where just about every single consumer goods we pay a lot for compare to states

If you buy a Vaio in the U.S., does the built-in EVDO modem work with Bell's network? It's not locked to Sprint, is it?

I echo your suggestion. I purchased my SZ780NW (Sprint built-in card) from P1 with a 7200RPM 160GB HD with free bloatware removal. The service is excellent and pricing is good. Mine arriving 26th of this month. Try them out and ask for Ivan.
