There is a continuing trend with Sony notebooks. They are offering more options and variations for cheaper and cheaper. Once considered only high-end, Sony notebooks now populate almost every price segment of the notebook market, and they even have a notebook that retails for less than $850 USD. It is my hope that they continue this trend, and I'm encouraged by a product I discovered on Newegg, the SZ645PA.

This model is not currently available directly from Sony, but other online retailers are offering it

It is currently priced at $1350 (at Newegg), which is very competitive compared to the Apple Macbook, Dell XPS M1330, and even Sony's own CR model. The processor, a 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo T5270, probably isn't very powerful, and the 80GB hard drive is relatively small by todays standards. It is another step in the right direction though. Sony seems to be trying to please and attract consumers by offering more options at cheaper prices than before. They still don't offer notebooks quite as cheap as other retailers such as Dell and HP, but I look forward to seeing new models from Sony and the lower prices they will be offered at.

    $1350 for a 1.4gig C2D and a 80GB HD? Keep trying, Sony. =[

The XPS m1330, a direct competitor to the SZ starts at $999, so Sony's got a way to go. However, there was a cheap Sony at Best Buy a few weeks ago that was on sale for $599.

Still, it has good battery life, Nvidia 8400 graphics, switchable graphics, not entirely garbage.

The $999 M1330 has a 4 cell battery, no Bluetooth, integrated graphics, no N wireless, and only a regular DVD burner (no dual layer). Their prices are comparable. Newegg is selling a different model, SZ640N01, for around $1150, which is what the Dell comes out to when you configure it similarly.

i was considering a 13.3" laptop...and the only two options i found were the xps m1330 and an sz....whenever i configured w/ similar specs, the prices would always be similar...sometimes, the dell being even more expensive. the battery life, hybrid gpu system, and build quality made it an easy choice for me.
