I am on my 7th Sony laptop and never had extended warranty, never had a major hardware problem until last year with VGN-S660P. It took Sony Service four tries and 2 months to fix it properly. They didn't listen to me, they just ran standard tests, which would not show "random shot down and or restart syndrome". All together they upgraded Firmware and Bios twice, replaced: memory 3 times, hard drive 2 times, power board, wireless LAN card, CPU and LCD, until finally mother board. I spend hours on the phone trying to get pass initial stage technical service with they're instructions on restarting, checking battery, making sure I don't have viruses or software conflicts and all other crop. At the end they made it work and even tried to make up to me for lost time and nerves. They offered me extended battery, which I accepted, but for VGN-TX770P, which I purchased while S660 was in the shop.
I hope I don't have to send my laptop there again, takes lots of patience and is frustrating. Overall I am happy with my sonys. I would not get extended warranty, I buy new laptop, while my old still has some value.
